my tranny is coming to the end of its life (aahhh). I would like to replace it with an ST220 6 speed. I know the speed sensor is different..is it possible to revert it back to the type in my 5 speed. Are there any other issues i need to over come to get this done ?...G.

If you're going that far you should save for a 3L to mate to it.

I was under the impression the axle lengths were different....

I'm pretty sure they are different ... The transmission is slight different in size, but yes you can make it work.

I believe Terry Haines went through everything to make a conversion kit, but decided not to because of the cost of the transmission. I can only imagine what shipping would be on one. He would be the person to email for the details about using one.

You could solve that by purchasing the hubs, rotors, calipers, etc. How much is the 6spd transmission just out of curiosity?

Good luck getting info including prices from overseas on any ST220 parts. I've emailed so many different places in regards as to where to get ST220 manifolds, TB's and other parts but have had no luck.

I would agree ... Shipping would be horrible, Just getting an intake shipped was over $200 & that is much ligher & smaller than a full transmission.

I paid about 150 bucks to have a 5spd shipped to me freight. That was the 5spd box, all 4 axles, rear diff, clutch disc, flywheel, pressure plate, and some little misc parts.

What?? Someone screwed you, it should not have been that much.

Actually I checked on shipping to the UK using DHL, UPS & Fedex ... all 3 were more than what I paid....

If it were in the states yes, but coming from the UK, and with the horrible exchange rate of about 2:1, it was just about the best I could get... unless I wanted to wait 30 days to get the intake.

Back to the point.

If you want to know exactly what it'll take to make the 6 speed work in a cougar email Terry. He is the best person to give you the info you need.

omg....I'm hoping you mean intake manifold and not just an intake. Please tell me it was a manifold.

Wisconsin to NC and it took 3 days. My wife shipped 30lbs worth of computer equipment from NC to eastern Europe and it cost her 80 bucks.

$80 to send .... If it cost them 60GBP it would be about $120. I don't know the weight of the UIM, but from the estimates I got on my own that was AVERAGE. Like I said I checked UPS, FedEx, and DHL ... all thre were about the same as what I paid, slightly more actually.

After finally finding & getting one though I may not end up being able to use it, which would suck, but may be good for someone else on here. :banghead:

A 6 speed would be nice, but expensive... AWD would amazing  Screw wheelhop & weigth transfer stealing your traction lol.

thanks for the feedback guys....i have seen 6 speed boxes for 600 bucks, with ave. 50k on them. I haven't seen ST220 manifolds anywhere..dealership only at the moment. I tried to sign up to contour.org weeks and weeks ago...no confirmation e-mail so far...so i don't have easy access to terry haines.

Well Shipping won't be an issue then

You could check Cheap car parts, Engines & 4x4 Parts. Find used car parts & car spares from online car breakers (http://www.247spares.co.uk/) for parts.... thats how I found my ST220 UIM, then found someone to help ship it over since no place wanted to deal with it.

Adding a 6spd or AWD would be easier for you, still not easy obviously, but at least there isn't the huge shipping hurdles to get the parts.

well; if you guys want parts shipped over...i could double check to see if the shipping costs you are being quoted are over the top...lmk...G.

600.....my god that's cheap. I paid significantly more for an 06 wrx 5spd with 13k on it. The STi 6spd was even more but it's worth every penny.

Is that 6spd any stronger than the 5?

Gorman
05-20-2008, 10:11 AM
first of all, i don't think an ST220 box is in the same league as an STi box. Second, i don't think the 6 speed is any stronger....it just keeps you in the powerband without having to rev the thing to the limit to keep the rev's up in the next gear...G. btw..i've contacted terry haines...awaiting a reply.

I don't correctly recall the ratios in the 220 box but I don't remember the gear spacing being much tighter than the MTX75. You most likely gain a taller overdrive and closer 4th and 5th.

FWIW, I think a better return on investment would be to clock the engine 90* or look about a Jag powertrain as even with six gears you're still stuck with FWD.

I spoke with TH about the 6 speed..he said it fits..it requires modified mounts ( which he has) and that he can make it work !... so the search for a box and diff is on....G.
