So I'm looking at bringing some "common problem" pieces along to take care of any "roadsize breakdowns" that me and Bigoudi may encounter along the way. Here's what I can think of so far, if anyone else has any recommendations please add them.

Spare alternator
Wheel studs
Duct tape
Extra cone air filter
Full size spare tire
Extra quart of oil, trans fluid, PS fluid, and gallon of coolant

Anything else?

Air compressor, Flashlight and Batteries, Tools, A jack.

unless your alt is already on the way to being dead, IMO leave it at home. same with wheel studs and spare air filter. those seem more like a pretty slim chance of being needed to be replaced in the next 5 years, let alone over a 4500 mile RT trip.

I plan on the following:
AAA membership
roadside emergency kit (guess I should open it and see what it includes - but assume flares, battery cables, flash light and other little things)
tool bag (since all my 'tools' fit in a little bag, they pretty much always live in my trunk anyway)
Full sized spare, jack, tire iron, wheel lock key and etc (also always in the trunk)
Electrical & duct tape (in the tool bag)
2-way radio (thanks NorCal :)) & spare batteries
extra motor oil (never have had the need for PS/trans, brake, coolant, etc fluids in everyday driving - so as long as all are topped off before leaving would not expect that to be different)... and if so, AAA
drinking water
blanket
and other stuff I would have with me anyway - cell, snacks, etc.

also gps - not only to get you where you need to go, but locate you if stuck in the middle of no where and need to tell someone where ya are. ;)

Only reason the wheel studs are listed is because Bigoudi broke two on his way home from Cali the other night and left him stranded in a tiny butt-crack town. I'm just trying to think of everything that can "conceivably" go wrong that can be fixed with the proper tools on the side of the road. Both me and Bigoudi are pretty quick at alt swaps so if one goes bad in either of our cars, we can probably swap it in about half an hour, instead of trying to find some place that has one and limp to various places. I figure I'll buy just a basic cheap reman'd alt and if neither of us use it, return it once we get back. Just saves us the headache IF one decides to go on us along the way.

Well, I think Goldie covered it pretty darn well. :)

then remember to bring your pile of socket extensions (which prob take up more room than the actual alt).

I've change out my alt, and also my rotors (not studs though), and would not want to attempt either on the side of the road - and even someone who does auto repair for a living, I wold be surprised if they could do either in 30 on the roadside. but suppose it is better to have it if you are willing to do it, and have the need, then not have the part.

Oh... and sunscreen & a hat prob would be good :) (maybe not as much of an issue for you az guys used to the summer sun)

Jumper cables never hurt.

Extra belts - the standard way to handle it is to replace the belts on the car and keep the old ones. I actually now have two sets of old belts in the camper.

Paper towels or even those hand-wipe things. They can come in very handy if you do have a problem.

Why would you need an extra air filter? That's one I wouldn't bother with.

Well since this happened to me on the way to the ford nationals last year, some extra assorted bolts.

I had front caliper bolt come out on the highway. Took 2 hrs for the tow truck to show up and when they did they didnt listen to me and didnt bring any boards to ramp my car up, so we wait another hr for a second truck to show up. Get on the truck and get taken to some small hole in the wall town. They tow truck lets me dig through a box of exrta bolts he had untill I found one that I modified to work. SO all in all it took me about 8hrs for a 3hr drive :banghead:

Also I always carry extra fuses in my car, and now some extra bolts as well. And a good pocket/utility knife is good to have, you never know when you need to cut somthing. Oh yeah and a car charger for your cell phone.

Wheel studs can be replaced in about 15 mins on the side of the road, just need a jack and a hammer... =) And with the roads they'll be travelling, wheel studs and the air filter are prob a good idea, they'll be headed thru nasty areas, and a few good dust storms could ruin a filter quickly... (Or at least bring a recharge kit and water.)

You seem to have the majority of things covered, but just make sure to do a few good days of PM before you leave, and you should be good to go.

Gonna have to disagree with not bringing an alt along. With a cougar its more likely needed than wheel studs or many other things. And if i had one with me on the way to and from Hamillfest, it would have saved me roughly 6 hours. Remember you'll be traveling home on Sunday most likely through small towns, try finding parts on a Sunday night ... its fun.

I'd say the alt really depends on the history of your particular car. The charging system problems seem to plague certain cars and are non-existant on others.

Based on experience, don't just bring one roll of duct tape....bring at least 3 rolls. I know my car has seen it's use on the way to fest, but on the way back it was also used for someones hood when the latch was starting to go.

Rope isn't a bad idea either, with a fiberglass kit it's easy to bust the mounting points on a decent impact, duct tape can help, but being able to tie it with rope helps a milllion times more.

What I bring:

Oil
coolant (usually a water bottle full)
water (a least a gallon)
Washer fluid (driving at night + bugs = pain when you are trying to find a gas station)
fuses
full size spare
jack
2-sided tape (mainly for bodykit)
Duct tape
Socket set with deep sockets
a knife (mainly for bodykit tape removal, also i got a pin hole in a hose once where it connected, cut the tube with the knife and re-attached)
Small gas can (especially the last time I drove through Nevada)
lighter
roadside kit (small first aid kit, wipes, etc)
car cleaner

it sounds like alot of stuff, but it all didn't take up more than 1/4 of the trunk. If you transfer any of the oil, washer fluid, etc into water bottles, you can keep them in the plasctic holders, just make sure they are labeled.

If at all possible, I would say a voltmeter. After my trip home last year, I don't leave home without one.

11pm outside Yuma, AZ all my lighting in my car shut down in the middle of a pitch black freeway. I almost shat my pants.

Yeah, buy you also have a few electrical mods going on in your car to justify that.

Good recommendations so far, and I'm going to second making sure you have a few spare fuses, or at least make sure you have the spares on the fuse box cover. Right after fest 3 years ago my car was pledge with a couple of fuse failures, no reason just age. On the way back from fest after about 2.5 hours of driving and about 45 minutes from home, the fuse for the fuel pump just gave up on me and the car died. No warnings and no problems up to that point. Fortunately linkman had that issue ones before and we had the car diagnosed and running in 5 minutes.

Driving to fest is going to be awesome this year. My checklist: Top off fluids. Fits full of money to pay for the goats gas. Car clean. Snacks. Ok, lets roll.

The quart of oil, trans fluid, ps fluid, and coolant are items that should be left at home. You can get those at 99% of gas stations and stores. If something were to happen and one of those items was needed you could drive few miles to the next stop in the other car and get what you needed. If you are traveling alone they would be a must but save the room for more important things. my opinion atleast. Good luck!

If you need to bring all that crap booby I would leave that car at home. Period. Not like anyone would miss it anyway. Just ride with someone or fly.

Its not that it NEEDS any of that, because it doesn't. The only problems with the car right now are small things that will be done in the next couple weeks and then I feel totally cool driving this thing anywhere. I'm just trying to think of things that theoretically COULD go wrong on the way and things I can bring just in case.

I'd throw a Contour PermaCap gas cap, and a Contour cup-holder ashtray into the box, just in case you run into someone at CougarFest who has paid for said items, and may ask for them in person.
