the systems from TruBendz Technology Exhaust | Intake (http://www.trubendz.com) seem to be fairly popular. I have a dual stainless steel borla from them. Sounds really nice... a tad loud for my daily driving tastes but I like it!

I've had several:
Monza Pacesetter - Nice tone, very sport and not loud. Rusts quickly.
DynoMax - Too much drone, raspy at WOT. Sounds nice at idle & cruise speeds.
Borla (with resonated tips) - Best sound IMO. Throaty when you get on it, subtle when not.
Exhaust meet!

I had a True Borla Single exhaust... with High flow Yo-dude Ypipe w/o cat
will have a True Borla Dual Exhaust, with MSDS headers, high flow y-pipe/Cat
Borla is REALLY the way to go with our Cougars, IMHO!

Yeah it was one of my first few mods. I don't want to fry my brains trying to remember exactly which year I did it though. lol
We hung the stock exhaust as an ornament in the basement of the apartment. We'll hang it in the garage as "decor" eventually.

I like the sound of my Flowmaster, just remember in MA they are all illegal now, so expect to get a few chats from the local staties. Townies haven't seemed to care. and definately keep your stock system intact for inspections. It only takes about 15 minutes to switch it over.

I'm the proud owner of the Flowmaster and I love it and wouldnt trade it for the world. However, i really like the "smooth" sound of the Borla. You can always type in Mercury Cougar Exhaust in Youtube and find vids of them all.

Are you serious? There are several different levels of FlowMaster and not all of them are really loud.
N - On that note, if you don't like "too loud" and want to still have your hearing at 30, stay away from Weapon-R exhaust. What a drone while you're driving! :banghead:

I want something loud but I want it to sound like an american car not a coffee can aka a import. Its an american made car it shouldnt sound like a 4 cylinder honda. I think I might go with flow master until I get enough money to go dual.

Hey N, which model FlowMaster exhaust are you getting? (Check out their assortment.)
Flowmaster, Inc. (http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/mufflers.html)
I'm getting a dual exhaust with Vibrant Performance cannon style tips put in next week.

As far as the MA laws are concerned, now your car cannot be any louder than the loudest factory version of your specific make and model in your model year. In other words, a 2000 cougar for instance can't be any louder than than stock, by letter of the law. It can't be as loud as a 2000 mustang GT, or even as loud as a 2000 5.0 Mercury Mountaineer. It makes no sense, especially since how bikes can be 99 dB after 1986 and 101 dB earlier than 1986. My flowmaster TruBendz (actually from the Yo-Dude era) is around 70 dB at WOT. It's stupid.
It may be better now, but the TruBends were hand made, and not fine tuned to a specific cougar. So when I got mine hung and welded, which I highly recommend and a good shop will do for around $50, the guy had to correct and fix up some of the over/under bent pieces. He also said he could have done the whole system in stainless for half the price. $500 shipped is what I paid for the stainless with Flowmaster.

Again, Flowmaster depends which series muffler. Sending all six cylinders into one muffler kind of gives it that droning sound. it's hard to avoid. But the 40 series is louder inside the car than outside. The 50 series is a bit quieter. You might wanna hear some in person and hold off a few weeks on the purchase.

Ya thats true. i might just go auto zone special with a magnaflow for now. I just want something its to quiet. then when I get my tax money back get something worth the money. I can just buy the muffler and slap it on myself for now.

Nothing wrong with Magnaflow . Its not as as loud as Flows yet is still very audible. Especially with an intake.

Flowmaster is loud, but I heard that Borla IS even louder. At this one car show I was at this week, this one guy put a Borla in his Dodge Neon and it sounded sick! I saw people spilling their drinks when this guy revved his car up. :goofy:
Another idea is to buy a resonator with your new exhaust. That will substantially lower the noise on the inside. I chose Flowmaster's 50 Series Delta Flow. The guys on my pool team said it would be perfect. I don't know if I'll put a resonator in or not.
Have I confused you even more, hmmm......?

I think that your friends are telling you that the Flowmaster will sound perfect based on how it sounds on a V8...
IMO, of all the exhausts I've heard, considering I have heard just about everyone's exhaust here in Mass/Conn... ANY Borla set-up wins HANDS-DOWN... a nice resonated Borla set-up sounds near perfect for our V6 set-up, especially for a stock Cougar with stock precats and maybe an intake...
again, just my honest opinion based on my experiences.

resonated borla FTMFW  + headers

Finding a Borla setup is easy. Finding a resonated one (prefabbed) is tougher. You may want to talk to a local shop. Personally I love Lou's Custom Exhaust if you can find on local.
Trubendz does not sell the resonated version because they are built into the tips. Unless that has changed.

LOL a lil bit. But I just got a straight pipe put in cuz my cat went and i wasnt about to pay $200 for one and for install. so thats gone now get rid of the resonator. I checked the borla website they dont have it for my car in stock. I have heard a couple of my friends exhausts from lous but they are pricey. I go to AXP in randolph they did my friends 2 GTP's but then again different engines and supercharged. Is Borla expensive?! because Iam cheap LOL. Im taking my car one week at a time. I fixed my rattle noise this week my interior tomorrow and my headlights next week Im goin to fix whatever is triggering my check engine light. Its all worth it Iam actually starting to Love my car... I hated it at first because it was to much work but its better than my last car.

My boyfriend had a straightpipe on with his flowmasters and it was stupid loud and rather annoying.
I have a magnaflow with MSDS Y-pipe and high flow cat, its really bassy. Pretty quite until the RPMs go up. Lots of times members sell used exhaust systems for good prices. So just keep your eye out.

Yea, that's why people mention when they have a "true" Borla kit.
I have a Trubendz setup with a Borla muffler. But it took me a while to track down a set of Borla brand resonated tips.
