You guys are awesome so I figured you can answer me this question. I did go to school for this crap for 4 years but this lil light http://www.t-mobilepictures.com/photo/photo34/44/20/1a364e0569ae.bmp?tw=305&th=228&_rh=80uav191ewvouhw7y8m5fn2mw Is ALWAYS on and aggravating. when I top off my coolant it shuts off. I dont know if its a bad sensor or what the hell it even is. Iam struggling :(

the cougar sensors are very sensitive but could be a bad one.

just fill it up a lil bit over the maximum line and you should be fine (ie: so it doesn't come on when you start your car on an incline -- the sensor is very picky). HOWEVER, if it keeps dropping past where you filled it, you have a leak somewhere and that could become a very large problem.

Ya I dont think I have a leak. but even if its like a CM below the line it goes on. didnt know if it was a common problem.

fill it about a 1/2 cm above the maximum line and you should be good to go if there's no leaks

Yeah, if all else fails replace your sensor in the bottom of the coolant tank. I used to have to park facing down any incline so the light wouldn't go on but since i swapped coolant sensors its been just fine and i'd dead on the line no matter which way i park... Do you park facing up a hill at ur house, work, etc.

Thats the weird thing I just park it straight at my house and at work. So it prolly is below the max line. So that light on my dash IS for the coolant?

yes that is most definitely the low coolant light. Mine is pretty picky also, so i just keep it a little above the line and it stays off.

Mine's always over-full - for that very reason.

The level shouldnt just go down. You probably have a leak somehwere. i would check it out

Take the plastic cover off the front of the engine (the one that says "24-valve DOHC Duratec" and look on the underside of it. You might have coolant stains from a weeping water pump.

I think that light going on was common on a lot of the '99 Cougars as mine went on a bit, too. :disgust: They did away with that light on the control center for the '02's, so I wouldn't panic. Odds are there's nothing wrong at all.
Another light that used to go on quite a bit was the engine light if you don't tighten your gas cap enough. Funny....on the '02's they actually have a sticker on the inside of the cap warning you to shut it tight or the engine light will go off. Go figure!

Ya My engine light is on to, but thats because I think I have a bad EGR sensor. Its eating ALL my gas. I use premium and here in massachusetts it is NOT cheap at all

Hey N,
You think gas is expensive in MA? Come to CT.....we'll show you how to empty your wallet at a wide variety of pumps! :banghead:
I always fuel up when I'm cruisin' thru Springfield. Seems to be the lowest around that I see.

LOL I dont wanna know I just paid $3.57 for premium and thats the cheapest i found. I put 10 bucks in and it gave me a quarter of a tank. I should run my car till empty and put regular in it again.

Yeah, out here I am paying $3.79 - $3.89 for 91 octane!!
But you should be running regular gas in your Cougar... Seriously...
Your ecu is factory tuned for regular fuel, and even if we think premium is helping the car, it really not, and you'll be hurting gas mileage, etc...
Switch back to regular! ;)
I run 91 or better in my SVT Contour, because it says to do so...
and if your EGR is the code that the check engine light is throwing, chances are pretty good that its NOT the EGR, but the DPFE sensor... we all have had that problem at one point or another.

Oh jesus, I get people saying use premium because it burns slower and it saves gas.... I will start using regular its cheaper. Ya my friend put a scanner on it and said Its running hot so instead of the exhaust going out where its suppose to it just circulates or something stupid along those lines. I just hope it is something cheap. i wish it was just an O2... If I told u all the problems I have with this thing You would all say I have my work cut out for me and Ive only had the thing for a lil over a year.:banghead:

ALL great points, Greg. I find in my personal experience that most Fords and Mercurys run pretty well on 87 Octane, yet GM's usually always need 91. Put regular in my Camaro and the pinging starts like you wouldn't believe. But, if you do buy regular, stay away from Citgo and most especially Stop & Shop gas. I personally like Getty and Sunoco. The brand does make a difference.

Plus citgo is owned by the leader of some communist country i forgot which one. Plus i paid $4.07 for 91 for my bike. First time over 4 bucks makes me not even want to ride it anymore, but then again aruba pays over 12 dollars a gallon and the UK pays 8 and some change. So realistically its cheap but i remember when it was a $1.80 but im only 20 i bet some people remember it alot cheaper lol.

I remember seeing $0.96 gas down in Georgia back in 96 ...
I recall seeing $1.10 back around 2002/2003 or so ... I remember when I could fill my car for less than $20 around 99/2k ...

Same here. I used to work part time 3 hours a week during junior year of high school (2001). It was enough to pay gas for the week ($14 on average) and have plenty left over for eating out with friends.

I Remeber working at Sunoco when I was 15-16 and it was def under $2.00. I use to fill my integra with just $20. I just put $30 in premium and gave me 3/4 of a tank. Its redonkulous! I just saw premium for $4.00 today it sucks!
