I got the newest oil pan design for the 3.0. Which oil pick tube do I need to use? Is there a difference between the 2.5 and 3.0. Thanks.

if it is the escape pan then you want the pickup from the escape.
the taurus/sable pan is about 1/4 deeper then the escape pan and so is the pickup ...

I have heard of people installing the updated escape pan on a taurus motor with no problems. Is this true?

Any 2.5L or 3L pan will install on any 2.5L or 3L so yes it is true.

So, can we say that putting an upgraded Escape oil pan on a 04 Sable 3L without an Escape pick-up tube will work fine?
There has been a lot of questions about this while doing a few 3L swaps out here in Mass/Conn land...
PM me if you want Chris...

The pans will all bolt up but they need their respective pickup tubes. So if you use the escape pan you need the escape pickup tube. The windage trays are also slightly different on each and you may need to swap those depending on the mounting point needed on the pickup tubes. The taurus pickup tube sits lower than the escapes so you won't be able to even bolt the escape pan on. It will hit the pickup tube.

Uh...maybe this was dumb, but I haven't had any problems
Last August when I swapped my blown 2.5 for a good 2.5, I grabbed just the oil pan from my 03 Escape 3.0 engine, so I'd have an updated oil pan. I didn't change anything else.
What should be happening?

OK, well I have done one 05 Sable 3L and installed the escape pan with zero problems, as I think for 05, the pick-up has the same part number for all duratec 3Ls (I could be wrong, but we did check it with an escape pick-up tube and it matched)
I did a 04 Sable 3L and the owner didn't provide an escape pick-up with their new oil pan, so I had to use a 2.5L pick-up tube, but had to cut the bracket down from the 2.5L pick-up tube, because the windage tray was blocking the mounting point for the 2.5L pick-up tube's bracket....
I was told that some people had done the same thing and it worked fine...
I am also running a updated Escape pan on my stock SVT 2.5L motor with stock pick-up tube and tray, no problems...

I am also still using the stock pick-up tube. When i did an engine swap i picked up the escape oil pan and kept the stock pick-up tube

Interesting... I guess as long as the pickup is close enough to the one that is used with the pan you shouldn't have a problem. The Taurus/Sable pan is deeper and I know the pickup is different than the stock Cougar/Contour pickup. The stock 2.5L pan will not bolt over the Taurus/Sable pickup. I guess I don't normally swap cars over to an Escape pan though so maybe it's just as deep as the Taurus/Sable pan. I thought the Escape pan was near identical to the 2.5L pan though.

I do believe teh escape pan is identical to the 2.5L oil pan.
when we did my 3L swap I purchased the escape pickup. never tried the pan with the sable pickup but we did note that the taurus/sable pan was deeper and so was the pickup.
interesting note on this is my 04 engine didn't have the support to the windage tray. where as the 04 we worked on this weekend did.

I'd be worried the Taurus/Sable pickup is mashed to the bottom of the pan if it was indeed longer than the Escape pickup and people weren't changing pickups when using the Escape pan.

I would be too, but the 04 and earlier Taurus/Sable pickup is WAY too long to get the Escape Oil pan to even get close to bolting it down... there is about a 3/8" to 1/2" gap that is caused by the pick-up tube.
But like I said earlier, the 05s might be different and use the shorter pick-up tubes, and maybe even the pan is shorter too in 05 (I can't remember)
