I'm a member of Autopia.org (http://autopia.org/forum/) and they have a live chat/shout feature that runs at the top of the forums.
Seems like it would be a cool addition for quick chats amongst members without the need for a thread.

I have absolutely no authority in the matter, but... I agree! :)
Their Guide to Detailing (http://autopia.org/forum/guide-detailing/) is also setup wonderfully!

Go ahead and do this . . . but don't say you weren't warned it might be a bad idea before you do . . .

I say I, even though all the forums that I've been on that have chat type things like this usualy end up being frequented by Aholes.

I recall chat software being purchased a couple years back so the CF organizers could talk in real time (IIRC the money for it came from CF funds but I don't know if that's true) - but I don't think anyone really ever used it.

There was one really brief update to the forums...it was only online for like an hour and there was a buddylist chat feature. I think it also made all of moderators or something too...lol, and that's why they disabled it.
