never gutted my cats. but if u wanna pick up some headers, then ill help you install them. It takes a little bit more know how and alot more time but id be willing to do it again.

I may even be doing it again. I have my eyes on another 99 cougar at the moment.

lets the engine breath a little better. There are pre-cats in the stock exhaust manifolds that clean the air a little bit before the main cat can finish the cleaning. Gutting the pre-cats lets the air flow a little better and increasing performance.

*search. there are many threads about it.

From my understanding the precats are there to help burn off excess fuel during cold starts to help emissions. They contain some type of material that once emptied out increases air volume thus increasing airflow. At least from what I know thats all there is to it. Dunno how much of an inspection issue it can create in NJ.

not sure about if it will effect inspections. Ill check that out in 09 when i need to get inspected again. But from what I have heard, as long as the engine and main cat is up to operating temperatures, there wont be a problem passing inspection.

when you install the gutted precats do you need MIL's for them?

yes. mine is an early 99 and needed 2. i have read something on here about later models being a little different (you might wanna search for the particulars).

thats weird. ive heard differently. Ive heard that one MIL is needed on the 01 and 02 models. That there was an o2 sensor back by the main cat. I have a 99 so I cant verify that. anyone?
