I am a 23 year old female originally from North Carolina, but I currently reside in Hampton, VA. For one reason or another, I have always been interested in cars. I absolutely love this website. I've been browsing the forum for some time now. Everyone seems to know so much about cars. Besides returning to school, what would you suggest if I wanted to learn as much as possible about cars? I feel as though . . . hell, why pay a mechanic to repair something that I could possibly learn to repair myself? :bs: I know a little, but I'm interested in learning so much more. How did you guys learn as much as you know? Any suggestions? Help me out here. Thanks!!!

Hi and welcome to NECO.
My suggestion is to get in touch with your local NECO chapter in your state and attend mod meets when they have them. Mod meets usually center around some repair work or another so you can watch and learn. Its usually a fun experience because its more than just work... its also in a social setting. Several mod meet i attended featured an engine swap, clutch replacement, and other misc things which now help me understand more about my car. So, just get your hands dirty and dig in! Also, if you havent already, buy yourself a manual for cougar/contour which will help you understand all the names and basic systems that are in our car.
Its always refreshing to have a girl wanting to know more about cars!
Welcome! :)

i think probably the best way to learn about your car is when you need to replace something on your car, before saying "ill just take it to a repair shop" read about what you need to replace(probably find out all about it on this website) and the steps you need to take and if you think you are up to it, do it yourself. practice makes perfect;)
