View Full Version : brief how to angel eye (demon eye, Halo) cold cathode method

since there have been alot of requests on a how to for this and i have some helpful pictures I figured I would make a brief one.

take the headlights apart (follow link)
CougarDB.com - Online Cougar Database '99-'02 (http://www.cougardb.com/howtoshow.php?howtoid=18)
there is also the oven method to use, but i did it as that how to.

you will need:

80mm cold cathode computer fans.

each one comes with a power inverter that will power 2 cathode lights that can be removed from the fan with screws. the inverter has a red and a black wire coming out of it (power and ground respectively) I'm not going into detail wiring this cause there is many ways to do it. In the end its a power and a ground that needs some sort of switched source. (a fuse is a good idea too)

stainless steel wire
screwdrivers
razor knife
Automotive goop (to reseal headlights) you will need 2 tubes I used one and didn't seal one of my headlights properly gotta redo it so i don't get condensation
Drill
file

to mount the cathode light remove the half moon at the bottom of the black headlight insert, then file out one of the small slits that was used to mount the half moon. this is where i ran my wires to power the cathode.
the other slit for the half moon was a mounting point for the ring itself. i just snugly twited stainless wire around secured at the back. Then drill a small hole somewhere at the top of where the ring will sit. place it so the hole is hidden behind the light. Use this as another mounting point.
I believe some people have used silicone to secure the rings too. Be careful as these rings can break. I never broke any but they look fragile.

next, mount the inverter inside the headlight housing, it fit quite nicely in mine as pictured. I drilled 2 small holes in the back of the housing for the power and ground wires and sealed them with some silicone.
to mount the inverters i just used the stick on Velcro that came with the fans.

http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff319/iceberg65/inverterhowto.jpg

next I used a low charge setting on a battery charger and connected the wires to it to test that the cathodes still worked. It might be a good idea to pick up some red tint if your doing red, as they are kinda pink out of the box. Ive been told that its the same stuff used for stained glass. and can be found at most hobby shops. I am going to pull mine apart at some point and tint them cause I was in a rush to get things back together.

finally reseal your headlights with the automotive goop (i suggest getting 2 tubes as one is stretching it to do it all well) and reinstall.

what mine look like currently (one ring per headlight)

I got my lights yesterday , looking at them I see the flourescent lights themselves are surrounded by a plastic tube with the 4 mounting tabs. I'm assuming you just remove the lights from the casing? And what would be the easiest way to do that? I don't feel like breaking one before I even install them lol

iceberg65
03-31-2008, 03:13 AM
sorry bout the delay didn't realize i missed a post here, yes you have it right after you remove the 4 screws holding it to the far the plastic surround just kinda pops apart, i tried to modify it so i could mount the whole thing for some added protection but it just didn't work out looking good, the rings are fragile but as long as your careful you wont break them. i never had any problems with mine.

Thanks, I was thinkin they'd give more protection as well, but wasnt sure how it'd look. Hopefully i'll have a chance to install these sometime soon.

they don't need extra protection and i think with the covers they would be wayyyyy to big to fit around the hole in the headlight

Valid point. I was thinkin protection from my wrecklessness while installing lol.

hahaha I bought ten packs of 80mm blacklights (2 light's in each pack) on tiger direct because they had them priced at something like a dollar a piece.. i was thinking what will i ever do with any of these.. i used a few packs on some computers i built.. but this will be pretty tight to do. Thanks!

to get my lights out of the casing i used a pair of pliars and crunched in between where the 2 wires run in.. i squeezed from the inside of the ring with the nose pointed out.. and that split the mounting hole. then i just pulled it apart.. that's worked for me three times.. but i just keep breaking the stupid lights trying to get them assembly back together..

iceberg65
04-11-2008, 10:51 PM
i must have just got lucky cause i never had any issues with breakage whatsoever. and i wasnt even all that gentle

well.. what happened was when i put the light back in the car to see how it would look.. i realized that the lights weren't lined up with the holes.. they still would shine fine.. but i didnt' like it.. so i took it apart and tried moving the black insert inside of the casing around and i guess i bent it wrong and i saw little pieces of glas at the bottom.. so i just threw both of my headlights under the hood and i'm leaving them there over night.. completely not in the modder mood any more haha..

those black half moons are to be removed from the headlight all together they come out very easy and interfere with the fitment of the halo's
edited first step and bolded that the half moons get removed, its quite import and your not the only one that missed that step.

well.. i removed the moons.. it was the full cover that i was having problems with. the black glossy panel with the 3 holes in it for the lights.. the actual piece you mount the lights to. I couldn't get it lined up again because i couldn't get the tab's to snap back in place.. so i just left it off and put the light back together.. it actually kinda looks alright.. i'm a nerd and all so wires and bare metal robot look aren't that bad.. but yea.. i'm not even going back into a headlight again haa.. i got black goo all over my carpet, and i'm guessing it won't be coming out anytime soon.

Cold Cathode 80mm Fan - Purple White Cold Cathode with Clear Case Fan (http://www.casemodwholesale.com/ccflfan-w.html)

It says "purple white" but I'm 90% sure the light itself is white.

I can't find pink. Anybody know where I can get some? I have one dead side of angel eyes on my car. Ron looked at them and its some mysterious problem.

in the computer world, pink and red are the same color apparantly...
what I mean is the red cathode fan lights really appear quite pink. to get a true red color you have to use either a red glass tint or thinned red paint on them.
the red ones in my picture are plain unmodified red but in the picture they show more red then they do in person.

Hmm I may have to try them then. They are pretty cheap on some computer sites.

Ok this sound like an easy way to get sweet colors into my cougar but i got one question....how well do they work on the road? cause i dont think they shine as bright am i right?

iceberg65
07-24-2008, 01:18 AM
due to the illegality colored halo's should strictly be for show, not for road use.

to answer your question tho they don't make the light from your headlight look colored. parked tho they do give off a colored glow in front of the car when the headlights are off.

ok so then what did you hook them up to a switch or what i kinda go excited and didnt read the step by step quite yet but i would love to have some lol...and what do you think would be the best color for a black cougar?

black goes with anything so just pick your favorite color. keep in mind the red looks kinda pink. and yes its just wired to a switch.

ok one last question before you see mine up here in a couple weeks lol where did you mount the wiring and the switch and what path and how hard was it to get back into the interior?

iceberg65
07-24-2008, 01:57 AM
I already had a hole drilled in the firewall for my stereo power wire i just used that. mounted the switch on the underside of the dash directly below the headlight switch and used a switched source from the fusebox for power. If you have an auto there will be a grommet where the clutch pedal would be that you should be able to run a wire through too.

so its just regular insulated wires and just youre typical light switch or did you use something fancy?

theres the switch. as for wiring i cant really get a good picture of that. its just a positive and a negative. an inline fuse would probably be a good idea but i never used one and haven't had an issue. You can get wire connections that are meant to hook into a fusebox under the fuse. or you could splice into a wire such as the one for the cd player. I honestly cant exactly remember what wire I used, and I grounded the wires in the engine bay.

nvm that last reply of mine, ive got everything needed, im just waiting on my lights to come in the mail any day now. i think i may need someone to explain the half moon thing. i see it in my lights, yes. but does it get intstalled back in?

iceberg65
08-29-2008, 07:20 PM
the half moon is not re-installed where their is a ring, with mine I did a single ring, and installed the half moon around the projector that doesn't have a cathode light (my half moon is painted red)

i've heard that these dim after a while is this true? and did you even tap into the fuse box?

iceberg65
09-09-2008, 09:43 PM
I did not tap into the fusebox, I used power off my stereo harness and an inline fuse (5a i think cant really remember tho). I haven't noticed any dimming but I dont have them on all that often either

XGamer15
09-12-2008, 10:19 PM
i wanna do either 4 white or 4 green. I hear a lot about tapping into the cig lighter but i dont think the cords are that long.

BlackBetty
09-12-2008, 10:38 PM
I've hear of that too but good luck finding it without a voltmeter. You could also hook it up to a fuse, then from the fuse to your battery if your not sure which wire to get into, and if you don't have an aftermarket deck.

after doing this, again, i need a punching bag. this is a horrible experience for me. they are VERY COOL, but what i had to go through was not worth it. i will post pics ina week or so completed. ive broken 3 cathode lights so far. and this mod is just not for amateurs ( i think) and i would have gladly paid for someone else to do it. they look great tho...

Its really a job that you have to take your time with, the difficulty isnt all that bad, its just extremely tedious and requires a soft touch. I must have been quite lucky:shrug: i had absolutely no issues with breaking them. I would say I do have "exceptional" DIY talents
