I'm being told that for a transmission flush and filter change they will need to take my tranny right out of the vehicle?? Is this true?

Filter is unserviceable. It's deep inside the transmission. Just get them to flush it out and it should take some of the debris out of the filter...

It can be replaced, but whoever told you the tranny has to be removed is correct. Its not worth it, and sometimes a flush can do more harm than good, escpecially if its a high mileage vehicle.Your best bet is to drain as much fluid as you can yourself, replace it with fresh fluid, drive it for a while and reapeat 2 or 3 times.

Kay thanks for the advice guys. It's much appreciated
You can buy a remote filter kit:
Trans-Dapt Performance Remote Oil Filter Relocation Kits (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=TRD%2D1155&N=700+4294847345+115&autoview=sku)
Just have to find somewhere to mount it. Splice into the stock cooler lines, the same place you splice for (or inline with) an aftermarket Trans Cooler (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=BMM%2D70268&N=700+%2D78449+115&autoview=sku).
The internal filter is just a screen that sits between the two halves of the trans case.
I flush my CD4E every year using FastCougar's "two bucket" method. Currently the beater's got 122k on the clock, and <knock on wood> no troubles.
