View Full Version : Need Some Help...
Alright, so... I think I have a small(ish) problem with my 3L.
After some spirited driving, i'll notice a bit of oil residue around the crankcase breather. It's not alot and it doesn't happen often and I'm constantly checking my oil level to make sure it's not dropping.
My setup is as follows:
-3.0 L Hybrid (2004 Ford Escape block)
-Jesse King P&P 2.5 heads w/ larger 3L-sized valves
-ST220 Valve Springs
-SVT Cams
-Clevite Main and Rod bearings
-SVT 19# Returnless injectors
Any idea why this might be happening? The previous owner told me it was also happening with him and it's never been a problem. The motor has pretty close to 40,000 miles on it and it's been extremely reliable.
Help! :)

What crankcase breather are you talking about? The crank case should route into the intake manifold. There is no breather in line. If you have a breather you are allowing un-metered air in which is a major issue.

I'm assuming your talking about the rubber line that runs between the front valve cover to the intake piping. I always get oil residue there too. I'm going to assume its not a problem.

Sorry. I guess I wasn't specific enough. The residue is around the hose. There is NO breather. My bad.

That's exactly what i'm talking about. Thanks.

Oil through the valve cover vents is fairly common. You can attach a oil separator between the vents and the intake but it fills up pretty quick. From my experience the 3L's usually pull much less oil through those lines vs. the stock 2.5L's. It may be worth replacing your PCV valve as it may be bad and they are very cheap.

Mine does that too. Oh well.

I wouldn't worry about it to much Mike. Just Get an Oil catch-can and you can drain it every so often. That way you know how much oil is coming out over time. You can look at mine on Sunday.

if ur not using the IMRC you can upgrade to 04-05 valvecovers and block off the crankcase breather on the block and use the valve cover PCV valve setup. thats what i am looking at doing

What would using the IMRC have to do with the breather setup on the 04-05? Not having bolt holes on the valve covers doesn't necessarily mean you can't use the IMRC. You could just relocate it somewhere else.
I'd be interested in seeing the breather setup for the 04-05 3L's because I have noticed that they block off the block oil separator port.

Depends on your goals but a 3L is almost always a better option (more power and higher reliability). There probably wouldn't be an entire section on this site devoted to 3L swaps if it wasn't somewhat beneficial. Search around.
