i'm not sure where to put this, but it's a gauge question so i thought i'd put it in here. i'm looking to get an oil pressure gauge to add to my a-pilar. i'm definately getting one of the autometer nv gauges to go with the other ones i already got. i've been looking around from prices and info on these gauges and found there there are 3 different NV oil pressure gauge choices. there is a full sweep electrical (http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10002_321918_-1), short sweep electrical (http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10002_321904_-1), and full sweep mechanical (http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10002_321902_-1). the prices from jegs are $199.99, $79.99, and $62.99 respectively.
my question is, what is the difference in the types? i know that the electrical ones have some kind of sending unit/sensor that measures the pressure then sends the info to the gauge and the mechanical has a tube that runs to the gauge to measure the pressure. and the difference in the 2 electrical gauges is just how much of the face the arrow moves and a different accuracy. which is better to use? i know there's only a $20 difference in the short sweep electrical and the mechanical, but is it worth the extra money to get electrical? and is it worth spending more than double for the full sweep electrical?

If you don't want to run an oil line inside your car, get the electrical, and a long sweep is going to be more accurate.

I would never put a mechanical Oil pressure or any mechanical gauge inside the car. Not unless you want hot oil sprayed in your face if you are ever get into a serious accident.

Go for the electric gauge, they are also a lot easier to install.

Oil sprayed in my face would be the least of my worries if I got in an accident that would get that close to severing the oil line that close to my face.

A mechanical gauge is going to be less prone to electrical system interference. you only have to run one tube from the oil gallery and the fitting will be easier to install since there is no sending unit to try and fit in there (they are a little on the large size).

I say go for the mechanical gauge.

Go all out and buy the electrical full sweep oil pressure guage:) i plan on getting the automeater C2 series full sweet electrical oil pressure gauge :) that is when i get $200 haha but im going to just get $300 and get the autometer C2 series full sweep volt meter at the same time...Do it right the first time;)

FYI, Summit Racing is a bit cheaper then Jegs.:)

dude the mechanical gauge is absolutely fine, i tapped into my head on the rear drivers side, it was very easy, and some may say this is inaccurate, but you'll get used to the reading so much that you would know when something is up, general rule of thumb is 10 psi for every 1000 rpms, this ensures proper oil flow throughout the engine and allows you to know you are using the proper oil weight in the motor. i get upwords of 100 rpms when the oil is at its coldest and it warms up to about 11-14 at idle. so the head is a very suitable location for the tap. also getting sprayed by oil is not going to happen EVER with a good install. common sense dude, besides the line is in the dash or the pillar pod.

I've had LOTS of cars with mechanical water temp and oil pressure gauges. I've even had some wrecks with them. It's not a problem. These are plumbed with soft copper tubing that EVEN IF you crunch the car enough to affect their run, they are MUCH softer then the structure around them and will bend rather then bust.

my oil line is plastic.
