So my gauge cluster LCD displays went crazy and had weird symbols and broken numbers (exploded numbers) one morning when my car needed a jump start. It was cold and it snowed so I don't know if this had an affect like everyone else who has had this problem. Some say it took a week or two and the problem fixed itself, but I was in the process of selling my car and couldn't get it certified without the mileage display working. So I took matters into my own hands without buying a new cluster with the mileage stored on it.
After removing the battery terminals I discovered that it only makes the LCDs go blank and soon after gets screwed up again. So I took the gauges out of the car and brought them inside the house. I took them apart to see if I could see anything out of place. I didn't so I put them back together and let it sit for 2 hours to warm up and perhaps dry out.
When I first reconnected the gauges they were still messed up. I disconnected and tried again and this time it was blank. I was about to give up and buy a used set of gauges. I decided to try connecting the gauges in a different order. I connected the white connector first (right side) and then I could see that my mileage and clock were displaying correctly. I prayed, and then connected the black (left) connector and sure enough the display was still working. I started the car and it stayed! I was sooo happy that I fixed the problem and for free!
Now if anyone comes accross this LCD display malfunction then you know that this process could make it work once again!
