View Full Version : SPEC vs SVT clutch.

Okay; I'm buying a new clutch this week. My OEM clutch is fine, but I'm installing a Fidanza and a Torsen, and it would be silly not to put in a new clutch at the same time.

I can get a new SVT clutch from Bill J for $250, or a new SPEC stage 1 from SVTCuervo for $298.

Is the SPEC worth the extra 50 bones? Can anyone speak to the similarities or differences between the two?

I like to drive relatively aggressively. I'll be drag-stripping it a couple of times a year. I'm still on the original 2.5L engine, which is doing fine. I'll drop a three in there one of these days, but not anytime soon, barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Thanks in advance.

I think you would be hard pressed to find any of the performance oriented cougars using an SVT clutch... I can't even think of a single person with one. (thats just an observation though. :) )

the svt clutch is good but my 3L burned it up pretty quick. i have a spec stage 3, and ive driven badazzes car with a 3+. the 3+ feels stock and there are no worries of over powering it

Comparing the spec 1 to the SVT I'd get the SVT clutch hands down. The spec clutches have a very high chance of chatter and the spec 1 is supposed to be identical to the SVT clutch. I've never had any issues with the SVT clutch in 3L's until I started running my supercharger kit. Save your self some cash and get a better clutch.

SPEC blows. i dunno if you remember my whole situation with them. Theyre flywheel and clutch wouldnt fit together, and i had to wait 2 weeks and pay for shipping to get them to fix it. And they kept blaming me about how i "tampered with it" etc. Theyre customer service was horrible and all treated you like you were an idiot. And finally when it gets put in, it chatters like a mother....

SVT ALLLLLL the way.

See, THAT'S exactly what I was looking for.

I'm not really interested in getting a super hard race clutch, as this is a daily driver. So I'd say a 3+ is WAY overkill.

But I had a suspicion that the SPEC 1 was pretty much the SVT equivalent. And added to the stories I've heard about the SPEC slave cylinders and all, I was seriously considering the SVT clutch.

Thanks, guys, for the input.

I would just get a OEM slave cylinder no matter what clutch you go with

my build MTX has one and I am going to get a Stage 3+ for my plans ...

SVt clutch Hands Down!

I've installed a bunch of them and they hold plenty off power, and they come with the FORD slave cylinder, and they do not chatter... I will always recommend this clutch to anyone that is staying Naturally aspirated.

i THINK josh (stealthyweasel) has an svt clutch, might be wrong though.

I ran one in my Cougar up until I put on the supercharger kit.

Then you went with the Spec 3+ right?

Yeah I do and I broke my first one on a hard 1-2

I got a new one and it's been good for about 1000 miles.. regardless it holds the power and feels softer then the cougar OE clutch IMO..

Plus it has a 1 year warranty.

Yup, the svt clutch wasn't holding when running at 10psi.

Andy, if you want to get together this weekend and take my car for a drive to test out my SVT clutch (and so I can give you the $10 I owe you lol) just let me know. I'm free both saturday and sunday.

BTW, I've had mine in for 20K miles now and it is still holding strong. I absolutly love it, and it was free!

Cool; I'm probably going to make a run to Pick n Pull on Saturday sometime, so maybe we can do it Saturday afternoon. That would be great, thanks!

I have an SVT clutch too - but I'm pushing totally stock power (well, I do have an SVT flywheel :naughty:).

I had both on the silver cougar, and didn't have a problem with either one. Although the Spec clutch showed more wear then I expected after only about 25k miles, so I replaced it with the SVT clutch.

So how much HP Torque will a SVT clutch be good up to. I have plans on Going 3L in the near future and possible F/I after that. I'm thinking of getting the Spec Stage 3 right away just incase.

All this love for the SVT clutch is a little scary to me. I know of two (the only two people I know specifically who have installed them in their cougars) of these clutches that just stright broke to ****. One the spline sleeve in the friction plate broke loose so no power went to the ground. The other the rivits holding the spring cage section sheered off. The first was running a heavily built 3.0 an the other was on a basically stock 2.5 with headers, intake and exhaust. from these two I am plannign to stay away from the SVT clutch.

Time will tell.

I just got mine back on the road this past weekend with a new SVT clutch, so I'm still in the break-in period. We'll soon see how it holds up to a well-modded 2.5 with an LSD.

Out of the 30-40 SVT's I've dropped 3L's into I haven't had any blowup their SVT clutch that I know of. I never had a Spec blow up either but I've always had compaints about the chatter.

if you are definately going to go FI spend the money on a spec stage 3+ ..... I just got mine in over the weekend with a 3L and a HMS MTX .... only drove it home last night but clutch feel is like stock as many have said. Now to break it in and at power trying to shift it slipped and it felt as it was slipping at very low rpm when trying to accelerate ..... but it held hard when accelerating in only one gear

Where is the best place to order a Spec Clutch? Gotta take advantage of this High Canadian Dollar.

Has anyone had the torsion springs in the SVT clutch bottom out on the stops? Can it really handle he torque of a built 3L with good tires.
