Stock shifter thread pattern differences

About cutting the shifter, the size thread of my '99MTX is 12mm x 1.25mm pitch, not 1/2" x 20 like the how-to says if you want to keep the same thread pitch for the stock shift knob...

My 2001 is 1/2" x 20 like the How-To says. Different years, different threads?
