The easiest way is to remove the entire piece, axle and mid-shaft BOTH at once. The axle snaps over the splines of the mid-shaft, and it's not real easy to separate without a slide hammer, ESPECIALLY while it's still under the car.

Pull the 2 10mm bolts that hold the mid-shaft carrier to the block bracket, take the end of the axle out of the steering knuckle, and then pull it straight out of the transmission, in one great big piece.

Remove serpentine belt. Drop the exhaust Y-pipe. Remove as many alternator bolts as you can from under the car. When you get it loose, pop the tie rod end out and pull the alternator out through the passenger's side fender.

It ain't easy, no matter how you do it.
