there is no timing belt only a water pump belt. the timing is done off of a chain for the 2.5.

search for project marvo gato and on the first page it the timing for the 2.5

Yes the Zetec has a timing belt. The waterpump isn't a bad idea when you're in there to replace whether its bad or not.

Here's an FAQ from CEG post 98 timing belt faq - CEG Forums (http://www.contour.org/ceg-vb/showthread.php?t=107)

All I found here on NECO was a bunch of broken links....

Here are some Autozone links
Timing Belt: Autozone Linky (http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/1b/c6/93/0900823d801bc693/repairInfoPages.htm)
Waterpump: Autozone Linky #2 (http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/1b/c4/af/0900823d801bc4af/repairInfoPages.htm)

Hope that helps ;)

While you are in there, too, you might want to think about replacing the tensioner and spring for the belt, too... if it has miles on it, its a good idea to replace... Some places have belt, spring and tensioner kits available...

if you have any sort of mile on your original pulley do change them. at 104k my tensioner pully was about to split in half. also all of the pulleys where worn flat, new they have a slight cup to them. also the tension spring, at least in the pre98 zetec, ie non-vct, gets removed after the tension is set with the tensioner.

900 for a timing belt and water pump is a little steep if you ask me. Ask the shop what their labor rate is and go from there. We usually charge in the range of 550-600 for the 2.0L

See what their price would be if you provided the parts.

Unless you are a seasoned mechanic I would not recommend trying this yourself. One tooth off on the belt when reassembling and you car will run like **** or the engine is junk.

I have done many water pumps on Foci and Contiques and they are not that bd but making sure all timing marks are in place and turning the engine by hand 3 times BY HAND is a must when doing anything with the timing belt.

You NEED to replace the tensioner and idler pulleys. I tried doing the Timing belt on my Contour and didn't replace the tensioner and pulleys. The belt was runnning off the pulleys and only lasted a couple months.

Here's the kit you can get at Autozone:
With Timing belt (http://www.autozone.com/R,APP1089584/vehicleId,2578801/initialAction,partProductDetail/store,774/partType,01155/shopping/partProductDetail.htm)
Without Timing Belt (http://www.autozone.com/R,APP1089827/vehicleId,2578801/initialAction,partProductDetail/store,774/partType,01155/shopping/partProductDetail.htm)

Here's the kit to set the timing: Zetec Cam Alignment and TDC Peg (http://www.zxtuner.com/product.sc?categoryId=23&productId=191)
