i want to get a new shift knob for my girlfriends 99 MTX cougar. i want to know which ones will fit, what exactly the reverse lockout does and if it is needed, and if so, which knobs will be able to fit and maintain the reverse lockout? thanks in advance. also, is there a DIY for changing the knob?

DYI is un-screw old, screw on new.

reverse lockout is not needed. It is a mechanical 'stop' in the knob to not allow you to attempt to put it in reverse unless the thing is raised.

for one "with" the reverse lockout, check ebay for either cougar or more likely focus. those with it will have the collar. the one I have came from CustomCougar (or whatever their current name is - do a search) and love it, but would not buy from them again.

For ones without, believe about any will work with the thread pattern.

and if you no longer want the reverse lock out on the tower, you can unscrew the bolt on the tower that holds down the trigular peice, take the pieve out and put the bolt back in.
