i love how insecure people get that they have to resort to the whole name calling with "cheater". they did not cheat, they broke a rule a rule of the game. what they did benefited them in absolutely no way for that game. if a lineman false starts is that cheating? he tried getting in position block a little early. ooooh he's a cheater. to use the word "cheater" there must be malicious intent behind the action, in my opinion. just think about it.
You, among others like you, don't want to admit what they have accomplished, so you resort to the name calling. what peeves me is you should come up with something accurate, b/c they did not cheat. semantics? maybe.
ah but who cares, my team won tonight and they have a week to rest. soo neener neener

I love how insecure Pats fans have to rationalize their team's cheating by saying "they only broke the rules, they didn't cheat or nothing" and then cry about how everyone hates them so much and "resorts to name calling". God I can't wait til they lose. I hope its in the Super Bowl, to one of those "inferior" NFC teams . . . some people need the smugness smacked right the **** out of them. I've decided its not really the team itself I hate - they're not really all that likeable, but truthfully, they're kinda bland and boring. Its the Patriot fans I've come to truly loathe. Since we're throwing random other teams out there, how bout them Cardinals? A win tomorrow would result in only the 2nd .500 season since they moved here in 1988. And realistically, we're 2 shanked field goals and a whole shipload of injuries away from being in a very nice position in the NFC. Around week 5, the mood around PHX was the usual "Well, there go the typical Cardinals...", but Coach Whisenhunt kept everyone going and we've got a great shot and finishing 8-8 tomorrow, which around here, is quite a feat.
if mike ditka were coach of da cardssssssss
they would be 16-0

I'm not crying that no one likes me. i could care less about being liked. i would like to draw a comparison the sox-yankees. while i hate the yankees b/c they are the yankees i still respect them b/c of what they did. i don't care if people hate the pats, hell i hate all the other 31 teams, but on game day i still respect them. I want the Pats to get Respect. the more they do the more they are hated and disrespected.
And how the hell are we smug? we don't look down....well i don't look down upon anyone else's team. even when we played the dolphins. i understand there are others out there who are jerks but you always wait til i say something and quote it as though you are directing it at me.
it really hurts my feelings, but then i think about the pats and all their perfectness...j/k (farts in champagne flute and sniffs it)
but seriously, how can you not respect what they have done? makes no sense. maybe i'm like the only pat fan whole feel that way and i don't realize that the rest of us are jerks, but just don't lump me in with them.

Because frankly I expected more from you. I understand that they are "your team" and you will cheer for them regardless. What's nauseating is the way you attempt to rationalize their cheating. "They didn't cheat, they just broke the rules" . . . so, you're ok with, say, Barry Bonds taking HGH? Hell, he didn't even technically break a rule then, since HGH wasn't banned from baseball. So are you ok with that? Cuz I'm sure not.
I wouldn't dislike the Patriot fans so much if they weren't so pathetic in their attempts to rationalize away cheating by calling it a different name, or saying its not a big deal, or whatever. Thats what bothers me. I don't understand why people don't have the balls to just say "Yeah, ok, they cheated, but they're still my team, and this doesn't change the way I feel about them." That I could certainly respect. By trying to promote this charade that they "just broke the rules, but they didn't cheat!" is ridiculous.

listen its just that the way i think is very technical. well i was ok with mark mcguire b/c what he was taking, andro, was a legal supplement in the eyes of the us and was not a banned substance (unless he took other stuff that was illegal). what he did was ok, it wasn't cheating b/c anyone else had the option to take it. and with barry its different b/c what he did was illegal according to us law.
and if you truly understood what i typed i clearly admitted they broke rules which is what you say i should do but i don't like the word cheater. yes it's splitting hairs, but thats just the way i am. like when you ask me how old i am, most people in my position would say 28, but i would say 27 but i turn 28 in 2 months. or if you ask my weight i would say 279.5 not 280. so technically speaking they did not cheat.
you are reading my words as though i am saying they did nothng and they are being falsely accused. ya they broke the rules, but they did not intend to deceive anyone. corking a bat is cheating b/c they are making it look like its real and they keep using it until they get caught.
the pats videotaped in the wide open. belichick says he did it b/c he thought they meant they can't use it for that game, so he was using the footage for the next time they met. you have to take him at his word. but no, b/c they are so good and they are winning, people want to find any negative news and all of a sudden they know what his true intentions were. also, in my opinion. goodell wanted to make an example of the whole situation.
just because i don't want to agree with your word to describe what happened i am pathetic? is that what its coming down to? semantics.

I'm not the biggest sports fan. I usually like to get certain people I know all riled up over stupid things. I admit, I gave people crap about the cheating thing, but that got old fast. I had to face it, this year I have no material on the Patriots. So I have to give it to the Pats fans, a perfect season. So perfect infact that people are forced to compare them to great teams of the past. The truth is that with the cheating or not, they still would have had a perfect season. Actually, I think that there was a big long stupid redundant thread about the whole cheating thing. So I just want to say congrats to all the Pats fans and COOGAH is right, everything in the past now no longer matters, and in the playoffs, everyone is starting on the same page. It seems as though other teams are starting to learn the Pats better, so this could get interesting.

Look, you can rationalize it however you want. If saying when they cheated they just "broke the rules" helps you feel better, thats fine. If thinking there's a difference between "breaking the rules" and "cheating" really helps you sleep better at night, knock yourself out. Its not "semantics", nor is it "splitting hairs" though. Its denial, pure and simple. I won't try to explain the difference though - wouldn't want to get in to splitting hair or semantics with you and have my words misconstrued again.

You're missing my point.
The Patriots cheated and were caught and punished for it. I don't think they were punished severely enough, but thats neither here nor there.
My point is the Patriots fans who continue to deny what they did was cheating annoy me. Just friggin call a spade a spade, stop trying to downplay it. And don't be surprised if and when the Patriots get their comeuppance. I generally loathe people who take pleasure in seeing another team lose, but man, if and when the Patriots do, its gonna be a happy, happy day for me. :)

the word "semantics" is wrong and i just realized it. my apologies Lord Ox. maybe the right word is "connotation". are you and I "Fat"? hell no. we are big....large and in charge. the denotative definitions of the words "fat" and "big" are pretty much the same, but in connotation they are not the same.
I would kill anyone if they called you or me fat, b/c its not true. You my boy and anyone disses you that'd piss me off. and i would keep arguing that point that we are big for 16, 17, 18 weeks if i had to. thats all i am saying.

OX, you're off-base. I don't think you realize how common it is with what the Patriots did? Nearly every team tapes. It's just like stealing signs in baseball. So many teams do it, and it just becomes part of the game. They have headsets in football for a reason, to call the plays...

Actually what the pats did is clearly written in the rules as not permitted. THere are rules forbidding recording signals from the dstands, press box, or anywhere else in the stadium. THe rule specifically says you are not allowed to tape on the sidelines, which the patriots did.
Have other teams done it? I'm sure they have, but like every other sport it isn't cheating if you don't get caught. Patsies got caught, bellicheat then says he didn't know he was cheating... the rule is in English and is very specific about taping from the sidelines. When this came out lots of stories came out about locker rooms being bugged, headsets "mysteriously" breaking down during crucial times in a game and one coach even admitted to hiring private investigators when the patriots came to town to guard the facility and had another travel with the team to check for bugs in the locker room.( I can find the links if you want but it'll take me a bit)
There is no way to say if the patsies are still cheating or not. They like to point the finger though, like they did to the Colts over the supposedly "piped in sound" that the TV station said it was sound track they use to add noise in the over the air broadcast since they can't mic the crowds due to language.
Anytime a team comes this close to tying the Miami Dolphins undefeated FULL season, post season included, I root against them no matter who they play. I never root the Colts.. I did when they played the patsies, and honestly if the Patsies and Colts don't meet in the playoffs I don't know of any team that CAN be the patriots. They are a good team, heck 30% of there players are former Dolphins. I couldn't be happier for wes welker's success this year, we have stupid coaches that let the biggest players go and use our top draft pick for the same kind of player we just lost.
So it isn't really personal against the patsies with me. well it kinda is.. but its more not wanting to see the record tied, since it can't be broken.
COOGAH
12-31-2007, 01:33 PM
yes the record can be broken b/c they play 2 more games.
and no one is seeing that i am not saying they didn't do anything wrong. yes they broke the rules, but i wouldn't call it cheating. when the-i believe it was '79-Steelers practiced in the off season in shoulder pads and had to give up a draft pick, would you call that cheating? the connotation is wrong. don't you want your team to be sharp and ready sooner than anyone else? they freakin practiced earlier in pads than anyone else. big whoop. Practice! <insert AI "practice" rant here>
i know its was against the rules as written, but who actually reads the rules? they have them explained to them and the meaning gets lost sometimes.
the only reason i am fighting this so much is b/c honestly what they did doesn't give them a huge advantage, like doping up would. hell they deserved to get punished more when they left the field in such a bad shape the way they did. it wasn't until they got beat by the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets, that they changed it.
this is a lost cause anyway b/c people like pissing me off and my life sucks and all i have are the Pats. and its crap like this that makes us into what we are accused of being.
PS Micah i think that analogy works. there are no style points in the NFL, whether you win by 1 point (inch) or you blow the team out of the water like 52-7 (mile). of course it doesn't fir into this discussion, i'll give you that. i don't know who posted that, if it was ann or ron, but they are old fogies who are probably senile, so we gotta ignore them :cover:

No, the record can't be broken, The record is undefeated season. THe record isnt 16 wins in a season.
Just because in 72 they only played a total of 16 games doesn't mean the undefeated can be broken. Undefeated isn't a number it is a thing. They can break the record for most consecutive games and most wins in a season, yes. But they can't be undefeated anymore than undefeated can be.
I mean its all in the connotations. :) And yes it helps me sleep better at night knowing Miami Will still be the first undefeated season and unfortunatly have to share that with the patsies.
