Clutch Chatter!!

Does any one know what part of the clutch makes the chattering noise?

Weak springs in the clutch plate itself will chatter. Failing release bearing can make a chattering noise as well.

What kind of clutch are you talking about? Many aftermarket clutches will "chatter" from day one, and it's normal. It is also referred to as gear rollover noise. I'm not sure this is what you're referring to or not.

Its a spec clutch and i know it normal for it i just want to kno what dumb part is making the noise and no its not the roll over or release bearing..The noise is anyoing lol some days it makes me wanna go back to my stock or try a different brand out :p

I'd say almost every single spec clutch chatters, which is why I always recommend the stock SVT clutch for those looking at NA power levels. My 3+ spec clutch hasn't had the chatter issue so I've been lucky so far.

You spend a lot of time with the clutch pedal depressed or are you just that much of a whiner? The only time I've ever had any clutch chatter is when the clutch is disengaged.

I feel his pain though. I'm using an SVT clutch and no chatter here, but I've bought several other products and upon receiving them I was disapointed.

It just sucks to buy new parts and find out they have issues that the manufacturer didn't mention.

I've come to learn that once you start modding a car heavily you will always get some kind of little "quirks" and nothing will be the same.

This thread is kinda dead but I have this same problem. It only does it as I'm slipping the clutch rolling into gear...It's kind of annoying and I feel like it shouldn't do it. Should I see about clutch replacement? I would get a SVT clutch and flywheel...the car has 98,500 miles so that's really good for an OEM clutch. I don't experience any difficulty shifting or anything other than the chatter, but it'll have to been done sooner or later, doesn't matter. Sometimes it does wanna pop outta first on me though, very rarely :( that could be a synchro right?

well i dont know a whole lot about all the parts in the clutch. I can tell you however I still have my stock clutch(original) at 130k and it does not chatter or slip out of gear. it doesnt grab near as well as it use to but i plan on installing the replacement i already bought this next month. I would have that checked out and just so you know Bill Jenkins at teamford can get you an svt clutch for like 258 now.

I talked to terry haines today about that same sound. he said its normal for that transmission and that if you use the ford honey transmission fluid it reduces it a lot. shoot him an email

I dont see how a fluid will reduce clutch chatter :facepalm: seen as the trans oil doesnt affect the clutch....Thats just the wounders of having aftermarket clutchs and flywheels

I may be having the same problem with chatter as well. I've been searching and unable to find anything close to the problem besides this.

My story, I purchased the car in the end of Nov of 07. It was doing fine till I started hearing a strange ticking noise when ever I decelerated. Eventually my tires became unbalanced and I had them aligned. The mechanic I talked to down at Sears came to me and told me that the front wheels were bent and I opted to rotate the back wheels from the back to the front for the time being. I know I'll have to replace my wheels and get new tires from them at the same time so I know that those are straight. After about a month of driving, the car seemed to wabble a bit. It would un-align and realign. I thought nothing of it.

About a month ago, I started hearing a groaning sound from the right side of my car. When I pulled more to the left it went away. I really didn't think much of it at first till this week. It's become really loud now. It still goes away when I lean left. It seems to start groaning around 40 mph and leaning right.

So, today I planned to change my oil, but I decided to check out what was going on with this loud noise. I jacked up the right side enough that I could spin the wheel. I started rotating it and started hearing that clicking sound. I went to look under my car to investigate further. I eventually found myself under my transmission. The ticking noise was coming from my transmission as I rotated the wheel around.

I then called my father and talked to him about my problem. He first started with the ticking noise coming from the ball bearings in the CV joint. The way he described it seemed to fit the sound I was hearing. He had me climb under again and check the boots for any tears to see if that was it. I didn't find any, just some grease and tape. He asked me if I had checked my transmission oil and I told him no. He started to talk about how transmissions were made and how he was unsure of what would cause the noise. I told him I'd have to look at my Chilton manual on my computer to look at it and find what plugs I need to find cause I believe I found the drain and fill plug, but was unsure.

Long story short version: The is a ticking noise comes from my transmission, it pulls to the right when accelerating hard, it groans when leaning, turning, or moving to the right direction at 40+ mph, and the tires unalign.

Any ideas?

I dont think this is the same chatter they are talking about here. I personally would take this post and make your own thread in the problems section. You will get more help there.
