My defrost vent popped right out and I haven't had time to put it back in due to the crappy very cold weather.

This is my first winter with the cougar and I noticed in my current state that defrost for the front windshield doesn't defrost the outer 6" of the windows very well even after having it running for quite some time. I know this sounds stupid, but does the vent actually channel the defrost differently when in versus out?

Hi Puggsley. Yes it does. Put it back in when you have the chance, as it will make a difference.

Good luck!

about 2 years ago I stuck a bit of clear silicone caulk on each end and popped it back in place (you need to make sure it is 100% centered to catch equally on both sides) and it's stayed ever since :)

This is a very common problem on the '99s (and maybe '00s - not sure). As has been said, your only real option is to glue the sucker down, and even that might not work; mine has been glued but still pops out again. I plan to re-glue it one of these days.

Ford TSB for this guys, use super velcro strips in all the flat areas. There is a kit for this through Ford but its a ridiculous $56.

Also depending on how rough your roads are in the area it might have actually broke the clips on the vent. Thats what mine did, but I really haven't had too many defrost problems. The only thing that happens is my vent slides if I take a hard corner.

Mine does the same but its just the corners and i keep meanig to glue it down but it doesnt effect my defrost at all then agian it's been like that since the beginning so maybe i does im just an idiot that likes to drive with a little hole to see through:banghead:

There are no clips to break on the vent, I BOUGHT one new from the dealership and it had no clips what-so-ever on it, looked exactly the same as the one in the car.

I have this problem with my 01... I was going to spray paint it silver anyways... Then try using double sided tape to hold in...

Mine only popped out after I had intentionally taken it out to paint it silver frost to match the car. I just ran a light bead of silicone around where the vent "seats" in the dash and popped it back in. Never had a problem since. Don't try double sided tape or clips or velcro. Just get a cheap tube of silicone. It will hold fine and stays slightly flexible.
