View Full Version : Upgrading seats from 99 to 01+

The wiring harness for the powered driver's seat is different between model years 99/00 and 01+. I am trying to install an XR seat in a 99. I searched around but didn't find much here or at TeamNECO.

Does anybody have the pinout for the plug that connects the seat to the car?
I was thinking of chopping off the 99 plug on the harness on the car side and replacing it with the 01+ plug.
Is it easier or better to replace the 01+ harness on the seat with a 99/00 harness?

Soldier989 did it. He put 01 ZN seats in his early 99 model. Might send him a PM...

drewmanf0o also has that knowledge. for the record, 2000 models need no work - at least my XR seats plugged right in to my 2000.

Just pull the pins out of the harness and put them in the same spots in the old harness plug. The wire colors should be very similar. Like an orange wire and a dark color wire. The 2 black/red wires do not matter which order they go in the harness as all it is is a loop of wire. Just make sure the 2 thick wires are in the right places.

I did it on LunarLimelights car when she got my Zn seats. As for the passenger seat if there are airbags the plugs are the same, on the other plug just stick a jumper in the green plug since it is yet another loop of wire.

Here is what the plug looks like on the '01 seat:

Drew, I didn't think I could pull the pins out. That's a thought...

Andrew-
I never got back to you, but I did what you suggested, and it worked out great! I'll post up the pin outs soon. The airbag sensor wires were the same color as the seat belt sensor wire. I was concerned about getting them mixed up until I recalled I could check for continuity on the seat belt wire.

Yeah the black with red stripe wires are not that important in mixing them up, one is just a loop and the other is for the seat belt switch. Glad to hear you got it sorted out.

Gamiller, please post your pinouts and Q & A in the FAQ's thread at the top of this forum for easy quick reference in the future. Thanks.

I had the same issue when I swapped mine, but I was going from a full power 99 seat, to a 01/02 seat with only power raise and lower and no air bags. Seatman told me I only needed to worry about the two fat wires (power and ground). So I just cut off the connectors and used some quick disconnects connectors, taped up the other wires, and it worked great. Just though I would share for those that might not need to wire up the full connector.

true, you won't need to wire the full connector, but i disagree that only power and ground are needed. if you don't wire up the seatbelt sensor wire, the dashboard light will be on for a few minutes whenever you start the car.

Hmmm, mine wasn't, but also can't say I recall ever seeing it now that I think about it.

correct, I remember having a long discussion about this at cougarfest with a number of people.... some cars dont have it [going to guess its the early 99's]. Mine doesnt, although its hard to remember whats what with the seats considering this is the 3 or 4th set thats been in the car.... eitherway, my seatbelts are removed and replaced with harnesses... I have never cut any wires in my car or shorted a wire so I can pretty confidently say those wires never existed in my car.

I just cut and wired mine together. Mind you it'll be a pain if/when you take the seat out, but all the controls work.

You can probably wire some connector to it. After all, it's just wire...

[99CougSupreme asked for this, so I am resurrected this thread.]

As Drew said, you can simply move the pins from one plug to the other. No cutting or splicing required! And it's a "no brainer;" the wire connects to the same spot on each plug. The 01 plug is the same as the 99 plug without the two pins on the left side.

Here's the factory plug on my 99 (born 10/28/98). Let's call it A.

And here's the plug on the 02 seats I bought. Let's call this B.

So mapping the pins, we get:

A1 > B1 (Seatbelt)
A2 > B2 (Power)
A3 > B4 (Ground)

B3 & B6 should be removed from the plug and covered. I wrapped electrical tape around them.
