this is all new to me, but from what i've read, some of you seem to know your ****. i only fell into this by chance. i was looking for something better on gas than my F250 SD and stumbled across a customized '99 2.5L Cougar sitting on a tiny used car/ salvage lot. to make a long story short, custom paint, graphics, suspension, exhaust, rims, full body kit, and upholstery work in progress.... $650  the old guy was asking $750. he obviously didn't know what he had. i know very little about mechanics, but even my 9 year old son knew that was a steal. anyways, here's where i need your combined expertise. the car needs an engine. what would give me the most bang for my buck? SVT 2.5L High Output (from salvage, but gone over nicely) / 3L (from 3L Duratec (http://www.3lduratec.com)) / the SVT upgrade to the 2.5L discussed in this forum? i'm looking for the cheapest way to get the most power at the wheels before dropping a chip, pulleys, headers and redoing the exhaust.

Welcome!
Dropping in a 3L will be your best bet IMO.

yeah, that's what i figured. i didn't want to drop that kind on change right off, but i can't stand the idea of half stepping. so let me ask, is anyone familiar with any other outfit supplying modified 3L engines besides 3L Duratec?

3L Duratec is run by blackcoog here on the forums, he does excellent work and there is no other place that will take care of a 3L swap for you like he will.
You really could do several different things.
Put in a stock 2.5 V6, do bolt-ons, and have a boat-load of fun in a not-too-crazy ride, and pretty cheap as well. You can have a TON of fun with the Cougar's even with the stock 2.5, and you can do the SVT bolt-ons to pep it up a bit.
Do the 3L swap. It is NOT a "direct bolt in" swap, although the modifications needed are minor in the grand scheme of things.

Welcome!
Yeah like bobby said you can have a load f fun with bolt on's on your 2.5 and things like headers and exhaust will all swap over to the 3L if you decide to go that way.
And if you do Blackcoog is you man.

wait, there is a South Boston in Virginia? or is that a typo and you meant MA? b/c if you are in MA then all you need to do is drive 89 miles west and talk to the guy who has done so many 3L swaps he did the last 2 while sleep-walking

Believe it or not, Boston, MA is actually NOT the center of the universe. (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=South+Boston,+VA,+United+States+of+America&ie=UTF8&ll=36.70366,-78.903809&spn=8.346835,20.566406&z=6&iwloc=addr&om=1)

i wish to not believe you. Boston, MA IS the center of the world. lol.
well let me correct myself....you would need to drive several hundred miles north to have greg work his 3l swapping magic on your car
