How was Thanksgiving?
Any new car toys? Anything else happening around here?
I got a new present for my car, actually 4 of them. :)

Awwwwwwww! They're so CUTE!!
My Cougar is parked for now. The IMRC no longer functions when it warms up (it's been giving me occasional issues for a while but now it's failing reliably, and it fails both ways - sticking open and closed), and the alternator is going.
The trip to my brother's place last Thursday was not fun - first the Cougar stalled on me when I got on the ramp to the Baltimore Beltway, then, as I was driving carefully on the way home to keep the IMRC closed (so they wouldn't stick open, which is why it stalled I hope) the headlights started strobing. :banghead: I made it back home okay, but I don't intend to take it anywhere at least until I can get the IMRC fixed.

Just this weekend I replaced my alternator for the second time. The first time, it took me a week. This time, it took me eight hours. A considerable improvement, I would say. The first alternator I put in was faulty, so Pep Boys gave me a new one for free.
I am also being absolutely slaughtered by my first semester of college. w00t!
Hopefully in the spring I will have money again and be able to do stuff to my car, and thus actually be good for something on this forum. Basically, I will have the DTG twin of tigg's cat
That doesn't sound like fun at all RJ. :( I hope you can figure it all out and get it fixed up. As for the lights flipping out, mine always does that. I can watch my gauge faces pulse in and out, and my headlights dim when I hit the brakes. :)
8 hours is a great improvement. Good job!
What classes do you have this semester? Anything that we may be able to help you with?
Aww, a DTG twin. That'll be awesome. Right now my car looks too much like Henry, it will be nice to see something different. ;) But you are still good for the forum with or without modding!

I'm taking engineering sciences, calculus, english, and history. Its actually not that hard, I just have alot of stuff due over the next few weeks.
. . . I take that back, calculus is terrible, but I should be able to make it through with a passing grade. I don't get it, it seems like the entire subject is teaching you how to almost find the answer!
I hated calculus. :ugh: I took it, passed it, and then found out that I didn't need it for my degree. :disgust:
I may be helpful with English or History if you get stuck. :)
I have Intermediate Maco-Economics, Intermediate Micro-Economics, Strategic Management, Information Systems in Organizations and Physical Science this semester.
Nope, you're not crazy.
That's not to say that there isn't an issue, but you're not crazy or imagining the dimming...

No, this looks like I'm actually turning off the headlights for a split second then turning them back on. No other changes in electrical load (i.e., I'm just cruising along at 70 mph, and the lights start blinking like Christmas lights). It's definitely more than the normal dimming we usually get.
frinesi2, For the dimming, it's just part of owning a Cougar, or, I'm beginning to think, any car these days, because my Impala does similar things (not as bad, but I can see the headlights dimming and brightening now and then). Very annoying. You can try to do the Big 3 (replacing ground and positive battery cables), which some people claim have helped, but I think that cars today are just electrically weak.
Calculus 1 is fun. :) Calc 2 and 3 is where things get really frustrating. :)

None of our cars are hibernating. Brent has discovered that the Mini makes a great daily driver due to the ridiculously good gas mileage. The Zephyr doesn't get driven much, but it'll get put into service on the regular when Peanut comes.
Is anyone else having a hard time adjusting to the fact that Christmas is right around the corner? Where in the heck did this year go???
Yes! I got some shopping done online last night so I'm getting better with it, but I'm still depressed at how quickly it seems to have come this year. :(

Also I couldn't pass up this on the new tires for the '00...
The 30-Day No Obligation Trial Period
We believe that these tires are among the very best you can buy for your performance vehicle. Therefore, if you are not 100% satisfied with the performance of your Eagle F1 All Season tires, you can exchange them within 30 days of purchase.
Just bring in your Eagle F1 All Season tires, along with the original sales receipt, to the Goodyear Retailer from which they were purchased within 30 days. They will be removed, and replacement Goodyear tires will be mounted and balanced-at no cost to you. Certain limitations apply.*
And the * details...
*Offer applies only to Eagle® featuring ResponsEdge Technology® and Eagle® F1 All Season tires. The exchange applies only to the same number of tires as originally purchased. If your exchange is for a more expensive tire, you'll have to pay the difference (including sales tax). Likewise, if your exchange is for a less expensive tire, you'll be refunded the difference. Valve stems are extra, if necessary. Tires that are damaged due to misuse, road hazards, mechanical problems related to the vehicle, use in any racing-related activities or competitive events, or tires that are removed from the original vehicle are excluded from this trial period and exchanges do not apply. This trial period only applies to the original tires purchased and not to the exchanged tires.
So it was a win-win no matter how I looked at it!

Calc 1 I remember. My first girlfriend was in the class with me. Calc 3 I remember, hooo boy. I spent the night before the third test in the class setting up for a Rusted Root concert...the morning, too. I was working on getting it set up, left to take the test, then had lunch, then back to the setup to finish up before the 7 p.m. show (or whatever it was).

RJ, we are finishing up infinte series. Honestly wtf is that useful for?
*tries to remember* Are those the Taylor and McLaurin series? If so, those things are amazingly useful - they can be used to estimate the value of a function that you can't easily calculate. They're one of many numerical methods that make us (well, computers now) capable of doing calculations that would require integration of functions that can't be integrated. Or, they can be used to do something like calculate Pi or e to as many places as you want. Or, if the function is just REALLY HARD to calculate for some reason, you can use a series to estimate the result.
RJ I really will make it there one day... :flushed:
They made some changes to the schedule - practice is now from 6-8 p.m., but they now have the option of scheduling parties at that time, so our practice might be canceled for that or other reasons. I doubt it'll happen often but you might want to check with me before you drive over. I'll warn you - it's quite a bit less formal than yours was - last night we just kind of puttered around all night, did some relays, that sort of thing; none of us were very motivated or having a good night. Usually we're better than that, though.
 Yeah, we definitely had a set routine and when we were having an off night, we were punished. ;) I'll get there, but not anytime in the next couple of weeks - too much homework...
I have 2 projects and 1 massive paper due this weekend. :( Finals are next weekend.

I'm not sure how to describe it - basically, the plastic piece on the end of the throttle cable goes over the ball on the bracket, then this clip goes over the plastic piece and clips on to the ball so the throttle cable stays in place. You don't happen to have one of those laying around, do you? :)

That would be the piece they lost when they put my tranny and clutch in. they welded 3 washers in there to fix it (better than the original). As for the lights dimming on a cougar mine has done that worse since putting my alt in. But the day before Thanksgiving I come up cut the car off only to come out later to leave again to the starter kicking out but not turning the car over. Get the battery tested its ok...so take the starter out (leeeeemmme tell you how fun that was). Find out the starter is ok...put it all back in clean up the grounds and now car starts and lights don't flicker!!!!![

Mine started a fun new trick today too...
I stopped at the gas station and filled up, went about my way. On my way home from work my gas gauge drops below E, idiot light comes on, miles to empty goes ---. :( It seems random, it will do that for a few minutes and then it all comes back. Sometimes it cuts out longer than others. I got it to fix itself by going over a bunch of bumps... This car is going to drive me crazy yet.

12-04-2007, 05:30 PM
Yeah thats all that I can think of for it to be cause that is the only thing I basically touched besides the #$$#R$$ starter heh....
And Tigg I think there is a float in your gas tank that tells you how much you have in there...that could be sticking (I could be wrong here but I believe that is how older cars did it.)
I dunno what's causing it, but it was okay today. It's very temperamental. :)

For the fuel gauge thing, daemond is right for older cars - for example, my camper's fuel gauge doesn't work for either tank reliably, and the problem is most likely exactly that part (times two, one for each tank ). It could also be the problem for our cars; I don't believe fuel-level-sensing technology has really improved, but I think it's far more likely to be an electrical gremlin of some kind, knowing our cars.
(Off to put 'er back together and go for a test drive.)
 Yaaaaayyyyyy RJ!
Who knows what the crazy car is doing. It did it once before, and then nothing until yesterday. The only thing I can think of is that I had the tank low, about 1/8 of a tank (which I very rarely do) and maybe it got confused or something. The last time it did it, it was just after I filled up and had gone about 30 miles again. I can't remember how low it was when I filled up though. I'll be paying attention now though! My car is special, I don't put anything past it... :goofy:

I've gotten through half of it. I bought it for leisure reading on the plane out to CA I think? What I've read has been pretty interesting (had to stop because I was then focusing on reading for classes).
How'd your report turn out? Did you like the book? How about Jet Blue's Mormon housewives? Interesting! Right now, that's all I specifically recall other than the general concept of globalization because this was over Labor Day (I believe) that I traveled out there.

Well, between the stray bullets, the stabbing deaths of two 70+ year old women literally across the street (and I mean literally - the shopping center where it happened is directly across the street from the gate I use), and the murder of a teenager for offering a girl a Slushee, this is actually one of the quieter things that has happened here.
Update: Actually they apparently had a shootout (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/01/02/AR2008010200902.html?hpid=topnews) with that guy and killed him. Okay, so that moves it up the list but I think it still doesn't top the stabbings or the murder of the teenager.

Wow. One article that sums up all the problems with the projects I work on (http://www.govexec.com/story_page.cfm?articleid=38942&dcn=e_gvet). It's VERY eye-opening, even for me who knew most of what is in the article.
One thing I do have to comment on in the article (only one):
...the "Census Bureau has a lack of personnel with large-scale IT program management experience."
We have (had) an entire division here that can do it and in fact did do most of the software we used in the past. But we threw them out when we hired FDCA, and they've all moved to other jobs, some even taking demotions in the process.
