just go on ebay lookup short shifter, there are some for like 30$ and they work just fine... i just put mine in and it worked great.. also if you wanna keep your reverse lock-out for your shifter its the only way to go. as far as bringing the threads down.. your gonna have to re-whelded... or just put after market shift knob on...

well the plan was to actually get a short shifter and have the company install it so i was also looking at stuff and people said like the $30 ones break easy

I had one from Street Racing, BMW Performance Parts, HONDA Performance Parts, Auto Parts - COSMO Racing Online (http://www.cosmoracing.com/productinfo.asp?cid=196&pid=737) and it felt really strong. This is a great company to deal with.

I would stay away from the ebay short shifters. I have heard waaaay too many stories of those breaking...
honestly, I would just saw off your shifter and get an aftermarket knob that just screws in.
B&M's are super nice, but you aren't really gonna see an increase in performance with a STS, so it is basically cosmetic. so if you do one, I would either saw it, or go with the B&M

Dude... you are so wrong.
The eBay units are the ones that everyone always breaks. The ball breaks off the bottom at the worst possible times. Look it up.
If you saw off your stock shifter, you can get a new shift knob that doesn't require threads, or you can easily re-thread yours. You need to buy a DIE in the same thread pitch as the old thread (take the piece you cut off into Sears and they can find you a new die to use to cut new threads on the shifter; they are about 4 bucks). YOU DO NOT HAVE TO RE-WELD ANYTHING.
You also need to chop off the bottom half of your reverse lockout to fit everything back on there. But it's just plastic, so it's not hard at all.

What about the Steeda tri-ax? Or does it require something like a spacer?

Steeda short shifter is a real one unlike the b&m which is basically a shorter stick with looks. You have to order it for the focus though with without the svt 6 speed and reverse lock out. Its the only Real short shifter of the bunch.

Dude i had one for 2-3 years on my civic and it still didn't break, after the freezing cold of the northern winters where the shifter is at its weakest it worked perfectly fine... so as far as a can tell its a good deal.. i'm just going based on my experience.

"real" or not, buying a sts won't do anything for you performance wise.

I don't think the Civic shifter is designed like ours is.
Do a search for "shifter" and "break" on this site, and see what you get.

I had a Custom Cougars short-throw shifter that broke on me. I had to drive 20 miles doing 5 mph in first gear to get home :banghead: Luckily it broke while it was still in gear. It would have sucked if it broke in neutral, then I would have had to get towed.
My thread about the broken shifter. (http://www.newcougar.org/forums/problems/117207-shifter-disconnected-shift-cable.html)

More like 2.5 - 3 inches, if you really want to accomplish anything.
The reverse lock sleeve is in 2 parts; you just need to remove the bottom half of it entirely.

Or just completely loose the "reverse lock out" and tie wrap your shift boot into place right under your shift knob.
