Just looking out for others on this since I have previously owned 2 2nd Gen Explorers:

The 4R55E and 5R55E transmissions are notorious for needing rebuilds roughly every 80K miles. With 122K on the odometer, I must ask ... have you had it rebuilt? If so, at what mileage? If not, have you changed the trans fluid regularly? If yes, at what intervals and when last?

That is a great engine in that explorer, I had one for about a year or so. The 4.0l is a stout engine. Mine ran with perfectly at 190k miles with original engine and trans, then the trans blew at about 190 so I sold it.

Was the transmission replaced with a fully rebuilt or new unit or was it replaced with one from another explorer that was used? I might be interested possibly.

Is the V8 transmission the same as the V6?

FastCougar

Nope ... the V8 Trans is the 4R70W (pretty much bullet proof for the power out of the 5L V8) and thus the reason why I got the V8 on my 97' XLT Explorer. I replaced the trans on my 96' Sport at 87K miles. 4.6L V8's run the 5R55E or some dirivitave and have better track records for reliability, but nothing has a better AT track record behind the V8 Explorers like the 4R70W.

Ok. I was gonna say my dad has the 98 V8 explorer and it has about 170k on the clock with no tranny problems.

IIRC, Ford stopped using the 4R70W when they stopped putting in 5L (302) engines ... I THINK that was with the end of the 2nd Gen run in 2001. The 4R70W was a 4 speed Auto (thus the 4 in the trans designation) used in a TON of RWD V8 Fords, from TBirds/Mustangs to Crown Vics. All 2002+ V8's are 4.6L modular engines mated to 5 speed automatics. The 5R55E was derived from the 4R44E & 4R55E (V6 Explorer trans), but many of those trans' shortcomings where revised and "solved" with the 5R55E. However, the 5R55E is far from trouble free.
