View Full Version : 2004 3L's

Anyone running a 2004 3L with it's stock cams, ported motor, with SVT intakes? We recently built one for a SVT Contour customer on our site and added a set of headers. The car seems abnormally fast and I was wondering if anyone else has this setup. It's the first 2004 motor we've built/installed so far. I'd be interested to see the dyno results for it but I'm not sure if the customer is planning on getting it dynoed any time soon. We have another going into a SVT we will be selling (minus headers) so I'll get a chance to compare then.

Have you checked on FCO Home (http://www.fordcontour.org) ??
I know that Dom was using the late model engines in some swaps, and gotten some good numbers from them. There might be some info there.

Dom wasn't using the SVT manifolds as Blackcoog stated. I'd be interested in seeing your customers dyno (when he does it).

I'm running an 04 Taurus engine but i have svt cams included to the svt intakes+msds headers and from what i've run so far it ain't too bad... Idk about you guys but i have wheel hop in the first 3 gears. Idk if thats normal or what because i came from a 2.5 atx. I should have dyno results before and after tune coming in december. So yes, it does feel faster to me haha. But aircougar said it was pretty quick(compared to his svt and another 3L) You'd have to ask what he thought about it.

I've installed an 04 and an 05 3L within the past 3 weeks, and they feel really quick... compared to the 01 sable motor I did 5 weeks ago, these 2 felt much quicker. the 01 went into a CSVT with svt cams and manifolds, headers, exhaust and stock y-pipe. the 04 went into newcat's 99 Cougar with the parts he listed above, and the 05 just went into a comepletly stock CSVT with svt cams and manifolds....
the Cougar felt Much faster than both SVTs...
I have yet to install a 3L with stock 3L cams...

damn... I went with an 02 block because of all the talk about possible issues with debris in the new engines. :(
I can't wait to see some numbers from the 04/05... maybe I will end up doing another swap next year.

I think that's a little drastic. Every swap is a bit different so you can't expect them all to be equal. I'd like to see a few dyno graphs rather than butt dynos
Are these 04+ engines coming with lower mileage too?

is there any modifing you have to do differently with the 04-05 3L engine than the 99-02? and i've noticed that the 04 and 05 3L have an alternator on to the spark plug wire connect to wear the front valve cover would be (i think that is the vulcan which wouldn't work in the cougar)

The 3 that I have received for the last 3 swaps were all under 19K miles. 9K, 11K, and 19K... each one cost $370.21 !!!

I think the consensus is the new '04/'05 blocks are the best so far. I have one its great you slap a turbo on it would be incredible. Plus look how cheap they are. No major mods required and your 200/200 with a good tune. I am going to attempt my first 3L swap next year.
Now what to do about an intake setup...
Good luck,
Adam

There is an LKQ distributing yard here in Webster, MA... so far I have worked on 3 motors from there , and i have another one that a NJ member has purchased for an install the first weekend in January...
I "plan" on getting more sometime in January, but I have to go when i am ready to buy My motor, and i'll pick up 2 or 3 more at the same time...
These guys are great! Call them up 2 days before, and they have it ready for you on a custom built pallet that the 3L sits in perfectly... just strap it down in the truck bed, and drive away!
Search Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market (http://www.car-part.com) for LKQ distributors that have 04-05 Taurus/sable motors, and you'll be surprised at how many are available...:)

He is actually a more frequent member of CEG: qbcsvt (he is on here too)
He has a SVT Contour.

I,ve been doing a little bit of reading. Found Ford changed the rocker ratio on the 04 and up 3.0l engines. Its a little bit more, dont remember the exact #'s off the top of my head...Was like going from a 1.52 ratio to a 2.10 ratio which would generate a little more lift with the SVT cams being used. Not sure how much duration and overall power would come from that setup. Might actually hurt lower end torque a bit off the line, but each car is set up a bit different abd these engines like rpms so i could compensate some...However, this change may account for a little bit more kick in the pants when doing mixed part builds.

Are the engines for the 04/05 the same fit for all models?!
I looked up 04/05 sables and taurus and they have different options of engine...one at 153hp and one at 200hp..will they fit no matter what engine you have?!

Sources for this?
It was argued on CEG, and possibly FCO. I don't believe the ratio changed.

The engine that you are referring to is the less powerful "vulcan" model of the 3L that is a single ohv setup. This will not work in a swap and you wouldn't want it either. The other model, the Duratec 3L is the dohc setup that will work and has the 200 hp. there were 3 engines for the 04-05 model year. two versions of the vulcan(one gas one "flexfuel") and then the duratec. you have to swap over the timing components from the 2.5 to work aka chain, gearset, cover, valve covers and a few other things. They don't work with the vulcan line of pushrod v-6 engines

I believe procyon said there was no change. The speculation was that the documentation from Ford about the newer 3.0L's had rounded up rocker ratio #'s.
