yea but where do i get the led bulbs and how do i get to the lights to replace them?
i got mines from eBay but i only did the led turn blinker's you have to remove the carpet around the back side of the lights it has 3 twist screws you can twist with your hand and simply swap them out make sure you get the right size i think is 1157 for the turn signal and 1156 for break and parking light .

If you are getting LED lamps and you want them to be brighter get the luxon bulbs not the el-cheapo 12led autozone specials.

IIRC, the 1156 is single intensity (or in incandecent bulb speak, only one filimant)
The 1157 would have 2, for things like brake/tail lights and turn signal/running lights.
The easiest way to figure out which one you have, pull the bulb. If its got 1 connector on the end its a 56, if its got to its a 57
Just remember, when you go to replace the bulbs, get one of the same color as the lens for the greatest brightness. Its explained on superbrightleds.com as to why this is, but just a reminder. The lens filters out all light except for the color of the lens. So in the case of tail lights, Red. White LEDs have little to no red spectrum light being emited, so they would look dull and almost non visible.

I was thinking of adding LED taillights to my Cougar. My idea was to go Junk yard hunting and find some newer model LED taillights. I'd look for some that had the lens part busted up or severly cracked so they'd be pretty useless to the jinkyard as thus MUCH cheaper. I'd trim the junkyard tailights so they it was just the back panel including the electrical connectors. I'd remove the entire Cougar taillight assembly and then remove the entire back section (Dremel tools are your friend!) to fit the junkyard section in. It would take some test fitting and working out the mounts since they're going to be in different spots. It should work and give you REAL BRIGHT LED lights just like new Caddys, Lincolns and Muranos.
Just a thought.

You're saying I can have hundreds of LEDs in a stock Cougar housing for $15? Or do you mean I can get on of those 10-15 LED bulbs that replaces the standard incandescent bulb?

That's not what I'm looking for. I want the look of it being an OEM taillight assembly, but completely filled with LEDs. Like the 25x15 (Approx, it's hard to count them at 80 mph) matrix that the new Caddys and Muranos have.

Why do that when you can just buy bare LEDs in bulk, then breadboard em?

To save fab time and most likely money. If you can find assemblies with broken lenses, but with intact electronics you're WAY ahead of the game since it's already wired up and proven to work on an automotive 12v system. It will also contain whatever reflectors are needed. And since they're broken, junk yards will sell them cheap. Which ever way you go, you STILL have to graft the LED assemblies to the Cougar lenses.
It's just a preference really.
