View Full Version : Odd Nitrous Question

Who has actually smelled automotive nitrous oxide? How strong is the sulfur smell that I hear people say its suppose to have?

I ask because I recently picked up a zex dry jet from Jamallot who got it from another former cougar owner with a questionable history. Jamallot was told that the tank was full, and there is certainly something in it, but I am wondering if it is actually nitrous oxide. When I was first installing the kit, I had a connection that was not tight and it was leaking pretty good. So, I closed the bottle and had my fiancee drain the line, so I could fix all of the connections, but I didn't recall any sulfur smell. It takes a good 5+ seconds to drain the nitrous out of the line, and I just had it spraying into the air, so there should have been a descent amount lingering in the air. Maybe this is still just me thinking I should feel more from 55 shot, but it doesn't really seem that much faster. So, tonight I got a little daring, I disconnected the line and opened the bottle slightly and stuck my face right into the stream. I still did not smell any type of sulfur smell, nor did I feel any odd affects from essentially huffing the gas. (I know this is not recommended, and I did not do it for fun, nor would I ever. So save your breath if you are going to flame me for it.)

Opinions/input please.

It doesn't *smell* persay, but it can make your nose crinkle in a weird way (hard to explain.) Anyways, it is only something like 100 PPM. So, there really is a small amount of sulfur dioxide in there. In a well-ventilated area you wouldn't be able to smell it. But, confine that auto-grade nitrous to a small area and you're gonna get sick.

If you're at all concerned about whether you've actually got nitrous in the tank, just let it all out and spend the $30-$35 for fresh nitrous and put your mind at ease.

You can definitely feel a 55 shot. When I first sprayed, I couldn't stop  It's nothing like the movies, but it is a kick in the pants for sure.

Yeah try that on a svt cammed 3L. Uh.. spin? Gotta stay away from that rev limiter:evil:

Anyways, around here it cost me $38 to fill up a 10lb bottle- for good measure I would just dump it and have n2o in there for sure.

Yeah, I think I'm going to dump it and just get the bottle refilled. Thanks.

When I was running nitrous, the place I filled up at got their nitrous from a medical supply company, so it was medical grade nitrous (no sulfur dioxide). That could be the case here. The only way to tell is to inhale a little ... you will know right away if it has sulfur dioxide in the mix ;)

You know, when I went to get my wisdom teeth out they gave me medical n2o and it didn't really do anything to me, so that might not be a great indicator:tongue:

My point was not the affect the nitrous would have on you, but rather, if the sulfur dioxide where present, you would definitely know it ;)
