So, I'm totally in love with the cougar (99-02), my boyfriend had one when we first got together, it was a 01, black, with zinik wheels, and a good system. I really don't which zinik wheels or what in the system, but I fell in love w/the car. He sold it about a month later and got a 2004 F150 Lariat SuperCrew. Which he has the wheels on and the system, but I was wondering if yall could advise me on what to look for in a cougar. I'm just going to buy one w/o the wheels system and all just plain so i can customize it and make it my own.
I just want some pointers. I definately want black or white. I think also w/o leather. I love the look of them. ( The boyfriend hates that about me.) But I was just looking for someone who knows about them and whats the best decisions to make, and all. Thanks a bunch.:)

Welcome! There is so much that you can read and learn about the cougar, Searching on a specific topic might help.

Good luck!

Just guessing your not looking for performance, just want something that looks good, can put a good system in, and runs well? Well depending on what you want to spend you should probably look for new 2001-2002 cougars. The main problems cougars have had .... Fuel pump issues with the return style fuel styems 99-00 mostly. Sun roofs with plastic tracks.... if you dont want a sun roof, try and stay away from it. And alternators.... not sure what to tell ya there ive been though more than anyone else, and theres no real way to look for it.

Just look for a nice clean one... and Black is beautiful. I love mine ALOT... its so clean and sleak and elegent. But then again its the hardest to keep clean, so its a labor of love.

Good luck searching.

but they are slow. and less common and more likely to be a Manual transmission if your an automatic type person.

I am a manual person, I would rather have a manual over a automatic any day. When Brett (bf) had his the alternator went out on it. Also the break caliper fell off yes i said fell off when he was driving down the road to school. It was kinda funny watching him get stopped and off the road. Yeah I want something that looks good and I can put a system in. Thanks.. hope to hear from yall soon!

his brake cailiper feel off to... haha.. im not alone... mine jumped ship doin 80mph on the PA turnpike on the way to be in the ford nationals show.. Took hrs to get it on the tow truck cause im soo low...

Other than my cailiper bailing on me, and the fuel pump recall, no problems at all. And even though mines an atx I still love it.

Ehh...Early 99 models were return style fuel systems...those were the good ones. In May of 99, they switched to returnless fuel systems, and they were the ones with the bad fuel pumps. If you buy a late 99, 2000, 2001, or 2001 (which would all have a returnless fuel system) you can call Ford with the VIN and see if it's been replaced to the updated model. If not, complain about it not running right, and see if it qualifies for replacement :)

As for the sunroof, early models (99 and 00) I think had the plastic tracks that would break. Later models (I think all 01s and 02s) had the metal tracks that will be fine.

Like Moraki said...alternators die in all of them.

I love Cougars! I am on my second one. I think the Cougar is a great car. Decent performance (V6 MTX), average-above average reliability (I've only had one alternator replaced in 4+ years, other than that, no major issues) and the Cougar is the hotness

Then you might want to fix your post. As it reads now its says that 99-00 cougars with return styles have fuel pump issues....

When his break caliper fell off he called me and he was really upset. I just told him he wasn't the only one and he was like.. thank goodness i wasn't the only person that happened to! lol But if any of yall live on the east coast know of any good ones in WV, OH,WV, NC, MD, or KY let me know. Like I said earlier I want something that looks good I'm not looking for something extremely fast. Also, do some of the cougars have the tan leather seats? I saw some pics when I was looking around on Autotrader and other sites of them w/ what appeared to be tan leather seats. Am I seeing things or do some of them have it? Thanks guys.

It's not that bad. I would have preferred grey when I bought mine, but the tan grew on me over time.

Welcome! Black cougs are really nice and sweet looking, but as said before, alittle harder to keep clean if you dont mind getting it washed often. Black, the Laser red or XR red , white are my top three choices. I think you can add on alot more with those colors. and chrome as well as black wheels look good on all three colors. As far as the system goes, alternators arent that great on the cougars, so be prepared for your alternator to go out sooner or later.
Feel free to ask any questions :)

I wouldnt get the vs model. I dont know how they optioned the 4 cyls but you may or may not be able to get a 4cyl loaded, id look into that. The v6 is going to cost more in gas, and mostly maintance. 2 extra cylinders means a lot more parts.

If it is a v6 then get one that has the updated oil pan kit. I think they fixed this in what 01 and up?? Other wise you will end up like 70% of the people on these forums wondering why your motor blew up, spend a few months reading, find out how ford is a evil and horrible company and hate life.

I dont think anyone has ever mentioned this also but I cant drive mine for more than 20 min without my legs going numb, but im used to driving trucks.

:gtfo:

I would be surprised if you could find 5 people who have had catastrophic engine failure under normal circumstances.

Why are you still here?!?!?

Go home, troll.

Let's see, you made a flaming post about how 70% of cougar owners here had their car blow up, then somebody responded that you were trolling (which you were), and now you're going to return it by reporting the post? I'm locking this thread, it's going nowhere fast and will turn into one big FAILBOAT.

Keep it civil in the future, on all sides. Thanks.
