First of all I want to say hello to all of you. Anyway I need help. I'm looking for a 99-02 Cougar and I have a couple of questions. What is the best year to buy and what year has the best options ? What mechanical problems should I look for ? Thanks everyone.

You should buy mine, it would give you a huge head start.

LOL, Yeah, it would (I looked at your car domain link). I'm looking for one in and around Atlanta. I would rather have one with no mods done to it.

I think you want J-mans car! It makes me drool...

Best in my opinion 2002 Red or Black Xr. Make sure it has the red/black leather seats. stock 17's, cool spoiler, hood scoop, the seats, and a bunch of extras. Make sure it is a v6, and manual, unless you are super lazy.

Early 99's are pretty solid. Late 99's are pretty buggy. 2000's are on the fence - hit or miss. 01 and later are pretty solid, but they are not as quick and I personally don't think they are as pretty.

I'm pretty darn happy with my 2000 model, except for the freaky electrical weirdness.

Best ones, though, IMO, are the early 99 models, built before May of 99. The build date is printed on the sticker inside the driver's door jamb.

All 4-cylinder Cougars are VERY reliable and quite trouble-free - except, you know... they're FOUR-CYLINDERS.

The CD4E Automatic transmissions are a little flaky. The MTX-75 manual trannies are pretty solid.

Hi Newguy and welcome!:) In my opinion look for a low mileage 2001-2002.

Things to look out for are faulty alternators, bad sunroofs (pretty much cured on the 01-02's with the switch from plastic to metal sunroof tracks), and fuel pump problems. As far as the fuel pumps, Ford instituted a 10 year extended warranty. So if the previous owner didn't have it replaced, you can under warranty (can't remember at the moment whether the mileage limit was 100,000, more, or unlimited).

The Cougar is as reliable as any other car (despite the joking you will get here), and I am very happy with mine.

Feel free to come back with any questions you may have, and good luck!

Thanks for the replys everyone. I like the XR edition, started looking last night at all the different editions, CN, XR, and ZN. If I do buy one it'll be a 2.5L with a 5 speed. Is it still possible to buy SVT parts for it from the Contour SVT ?

They are all over the place. They are slowly dropping out of production, though, so many must be bought used. But the market is booming - just check the classifieds here and over at www.contour.org.
