What are everyone's opinions on the L7's. I am looking for mostly SQ, and have 2 JL W0s right now. Thanks for your insight.

I have always been told that the L7 solo-barics square subs take a butt load more power to run and dont give the SQ of a round sub. Just my info.

I've heard a little differently, true they do take much more power than the round solobarics, but 10's will sound like 12's, very deep and crisp bass outta these bad boys. Critics were initially very harsh on the square design, but since it was released it has won several design and performance awards. I have the round ones now, if I could afford it I would upgrade to the L7s in heartbeat. The only drawback I know of with these is the extra money you have to sink into buying a bigger amp to power them.

The 12s take 750 watts each
SQ on kickers is usually not their strong point. They're better for SPL (in general)

Ok heres the scoop, the squares right now are the best, you cant get any better as of now.Kicker stats say say that they can only handle 750 watts max which is bull. More like 750 rms. This is alot of power and to most normal people this is alot of watts. Although the pay off is one 12 or hell one 10 if hooked up right will sound way louder than your 2 JL's. 1 10= 2 12 rounds, just to give you more stats.

TheCougR... i have seen a JL 10W3 handle 1100 watts.... now that was loud - especially when he had 3 of them each with 3300 watts total.... if you want a TRUE big sub for SPL then break your bank account and get a **real** sub... MMats or DD i'm sure there are more than just theses... also the fight between which mainstream sub is better is an ever going battle of opinions....

You can't get any better what right now? Subs? I highly doubt that. Kicker aren't the be all and end all. Dave Newman over on CEG can point you to a couple of other manufacturers whose subs outperform Kicker, JL, etc etc and comparable price.
1 S12L7 = 2 12" JLs? That's an odd equation. What are you going by? RMS? That doesn't MEAN anything

I was always told that RMS was what meant something and peak numbers were worthless...or is that just for amps?

It's for speakers too. Max handling power of 900 watts is no good if the sound is completely distorted at 5

Okay so now you're saying that RMS is important for amps and speakers, but not subs? I'm confused dude. Or are you just saying that certain subs can handle more than their RMS rating without distortion?

RMS is a guage to start with.... however a well manufactured sub will handle much more than that and cleanly... JL subs IMO are underated... how can a 250 RMS sub handle 1100 watts constantly without blowing... yes it does heat up and he only plays it like that for a bit (it's too loud for constant listening anyways) but it still could handle it.... essentially if you are not competing RMS is something you should go buy to match your subs and amps together... when you get into competition it's a whole new ball game.

Sorry, I meant for speakers AND subs. Subs are speakers too!

I have 1 square l7 10" in amy's contour and it sounds great. at the shop there is a guy with a single 12 w/ 1000 watts on it doing 148 db at the windshield. the l7's are kick ass subs. i am not going to say they are the very best but they are awesome. i am also a huge fan of jl audio. both kicker and jl treated me great anyime i needed anything for my cars and when i was at spring break nats the reps were awesome and the techs from jl and kicker both worked on my car. i had all kicker amps and 18 jl 10 w6 woofers.

although my shop dosent sell kicker, i will say the l7 is a pretty good sub, but to be honest almost any high quality sub can sound good with the right installer. period. it makes no difference if its kicker, jl, rockford(puke), mtx whatever- find a good installer and youll bee happy with any. fyi- the jl w3 is a dual voice coil sub and EACH voice coil is 250rms so 1 sub is rated for 500rms. distortion does matter on a sub just as much as mids and highs so keep this in mind when shopping for an amp. the problem exists when people dont hear the sub distorting and so they think everthing is fine and they blame subs before blaming the user or amp. if you want a really loud subwoofer check out the eclipse titanium line. at 1000 a peice its pricey, but they have 3.5" of excursion-up and down movement. very loud for one sub if you have 1000 watts! last thing is to any eclipse lover- they will have a 1/2 din dvd player later this year so keep your eyes open!

to put everything in simpler termsfor a basic system you match the rms value of the sub to the power of the amp like if its 1000 watts X 1 then it will put out 1000 watts rms to your sub. Now Puck said something about good brands, those are ok but i have always liked Ground Zero. Trust me you have never heard anything like a ground zero when tis hooked up right and have enough power going to it. Although GZ went out of business in america and now only deals out of europe. My Ground Zero 1000 wats RMS! No joke i got a Earthquake 200DHC the 2000 watts rms amp runin to it with a double jumper bridged down to 1 ohm. Don't knocj it untill you've heard it.

I'm with pucks thought JL are way underated I run both their speakers (subz) lines in both of my cars they can handle a beating. I've had kicker they had great spl low Hz rating but distorted no sq. in a sense. I like a good balance. But if you want spl maybe go with th L7's but I still like JL they give any sound you want them to.

I have one of the 15" L7's in my car, taking 1000 watts and asking for more. It pounds like you wouldn't believe. The box takes up very little space (1.5 cubic feet) and the sound is incredible. I had two 12" MTX Thunder 5000's in my old car, and this one sub outperforms those two by miles. I highly recommend the L7.

Just a little update on the L7. We confiscated the db meter at work a few weeks ago. My L7 hits at 116 db at my "normal" listening volume, which is between 1/2 and 2/3 volume. Due to being stupid, I did not turn it up all the way to see what it would do. Frankly, though, I'm not interested in competition sound, so the sound level of a jet airplane taking off is more than enough for me.
