This happened today when I was on my way to work back from lunch. I had just made an 70 degree left turn into the last stretch of road before I arrived back at work. The speed limit is 45 and I was doing about 50 coming out of the turn in 3rd so my exhaust was audible. There was a kid on a bicycle in the opposite lane heading the opposite direction. As soon as I passed him I looked in my rearview. This kid WHIPS his freakin' head around and was staring for a good 5 seconds before his wheels started to wobble and he ****ing wrecked. I don't know if he hit a pothole or something but it was the funniest thing I've seen in a long time so I figured I'd share it with you guys.

I REALLY hate when people decide to act like they're GDFin' Lance Armstrong and ride in the street in the middle of heavy traffic as opposed to the totally perfect sidewalk.

I beep my horn at these imbeciles, and it doesn't bother me. I hate people holding me up because they want to seem like they're sporting.

Too bad bikes in most towns, cities and states, are supposed to ride on the road and obey all traffic laws, and all motorists are supposed to treat them like any other vehicle so really you are just being a douche to someone who may ride for exercise, fun, or because they have no other means of transportation.

Hell in the town I grew up in you can get a ticket for riding a bike on the sidewalk I have seen it happen more than once (Certain criteria like over the age of 16). Cars that act like you describe though usually get a large fine for reckless endangerment, because they are posing a risk to another vehicle on the road.

Bubby him wrecking his bike though because he wasn't paying attention now I got a laugh out of that:biggrin:

Unfortunately like Darkhorse said in most cities its illegal to ride your bike on the sidewalk. You're "supposed" to ride on the side of the road WITH the flow of traffic. Its a law and teaching I strongly disagree with for a number of reasons.

A - Riding on the road: With how heavy traffic is around here, and how tight the roads are during rush hour, I want to be as far away from those cars as I can if I'm on a bicycle. Around here the "bike lane" is about 2 feet wide, and you're pinched against the curb on one side and cars on the other. I sure as hell wouldn't feel comfortable in that position.

B - Riding WITH the flow of traffic: This means you are blind when it comes to the cars on the road. If someone is swerving or hugging the curb, you're SOL and won't even know what hit you. You have no chance to react and can't brace yourself for an impact. You're dead before you even know there was a car coming.

When I ride a bike, I try to ride ON the sidewalk, AGAINST the flow of traffic. I feel the safest doing this, as I can anticipate an out of control car, and also have more room for error if I happen to hit a rock or something. Give me the damned ticket, I don't care. Its not worth getting killed unnecessarily to ride the "proper" way.

I think I've nearly fallen off my bike a few times due to cool cars going the other direction... On the other hand, I'm notorious for staring at nice cars. For the first few months we were dating, my girlfriend worried when I'd be riding in the car with her and would whip my head around to look at something... Now, she knows that when I'm doing that, I'm looking at a car, not a woman. :)

My policy on bicycles riding on the street is that I treat them as a motor vehicle right up until they don't act like one (most commonly, by running red lights/stopsigns). With any bike that obeys the laws, I keep a good following distance behind, only pass if there's a passing lane, etc. When they don't, my policy switches to "don't actually touch him; anything else goes". Basically, as long as they're obeying laws, I remember that bikes/riders are relatively small and fragile and that I don't want to hurt them; when they stop obeying laws, I remember that bikes/riders are relatively small and fragile and can't hurt me.

Wow Bobby, it's amazing how this story went from a kid eating it by falling off his bike, to you preaching the laws of bike riding

When I was 15 a dumb azz cop gave me and a friend a ticket for going through a red light. We were waiting at the light to cross and no cars were coming so we went. A cop comes by and flips his lights on and comes after us. The cop was really pissed and started yelling at us. Honestly, people ride there bikes across the street all the time when cars aren't coming. It's like waiting at a cross walk when no cars are in site. We had to go to court for the damn ticket. If I ever see that cop again I'm going to find a way to pay him back for that one.

Just because you were on a bike, how does that make it any different from kpeeks' thread (http://www.newcougar.org/forums/road-tales/112496-i-just-got-ticket.html)? A red light is a red light. Besides, if the cop was close enough to see you go through a red, then there were cars around (or at least his). I don't see any reason to want to "pay him back" for doing his job. (Although I do agree that it's a bit absurd to ticket a couple of 15-year-olds rather than just pulling them aside for some talking-to for a while.)

I suppose you could have gotten off the bikes and walked them across the intersection, but then you would have gotten a jaywalking ticket instead.

that's hillarious!! stupid kid!

As for the bike thing, it's a big ticket around here. It's called "share the road". When I ride my bike, with traffic, along the curb, following the rules, you should show the same respect. The reason Bobby that you ride WITH traffic and not into it...well, you drive a car...what does it do to you when something is coming at you?! As a driver of a car...it's dangerous.
