My CEL came on and said EGR Flow Insufficient and the guy told me I could clean it and that the carbon deposits were maybe the thing making my engine make a small pinging noise upon acceleration. Only one problem is where is it and how do I change/clean it?

Looks like this.

This one is not from a Cougar, but it looks the same. It should be near the back of the engine compartment if I remember correctly.

Insufficient EGR flow is usually the fault of a failing DPFE sensor. I can't believe nobody said that yet. Your EGR valve is probably fine. Clean the EGR passages under the throttle body gasket, if anything, and replace your DPFE sensor.

What is the DPFE sensor, how much does it cost, and how hard is it to replace? i'm kinda new to this car and don't know much about it yet

its pretty much the EGR sensor. Go it fordpartsonline.com and input your cougar, it will be under emissions. mine was about 60 bucks. and its a bit difficult to replace. you have to move a few things to get to it. Im sure someone has a pic handy of where it is. Its like on the right side of the block. If you trace your EGR tubing youll find it.

There is a photo around of the DPFE sensor somewhere. Basically, it is bolted onto the driver's side end of the rear bank cylinder head, down low. You can see it when leaning over the drivers side fender; it is down below where the EGR valve is located. It has an electrical plug coming out of it, and 2 rubber hoses coming off the bottom edge. It is held on by 2 small nuts; not hard to remove & replace - it's just in a relatively tight spot.
If you lok at the photo in post #5, you can see it below and behind the EGR valve. There's a yellow and white wire visible in the bottom end of the circled area; that's the plug on the DPFE sensor.
Waiting for someone to find a better photo...
