hi my name is roger and im trying to mod my 99 cougar atx... i have svt lite including maf and injectors..CAI/gutted precats/custom dual exhaust w/ highflow main cat..pws & crank pulleys.. and superchips tune chip.. tuned for firmer shift points and air/fuel ect.... and a tranny cooler

well my question is that i installed a high stall 3000 torque converter but now i have hardly any torque under the low rpm's.. when the car is completly stopped and i floor the gas pedal it has no power and slowly gains power and around 3000-3500 it takes off.. if i drive how i should it seems ok like stock...also when i put it in drive it takes longer for the car to start moving... and if i put it in reverse the torque converter doesent lock and i need to press the gas to start moving similar to mtx....

when i do the brake stall test the car willl rev to 2500 but it does not move the car at all.. i know the stall is 3000 but before even at 1800-2300 stock converter (2600 +/-) there was more power than now... driving in high way theres no problem..

what do you think?? is there a problem with my high stall torque conveter?? do i have to program the tranny computer to know that it has a higher stall??? the shop where i purchased told me that i needed to upgrade my tranny valve body and that would make it better.. is this true???
sorry for the huge essay....thanks roger..

The shop where i purchased the torqe converter told me to install the tranny valve body w/ sonnax vlaves and the transgo shift kit...

I thought thats what a high stall converter was supposed to do.

It is working just like it should. I would assume that the aftermarket converter is a lot more efficient and accurate than the stock one...reason why the stock converter starts working at a lower speed that it is rated, howeverm 2600 for a stock one seems a little high. A hi stall like that is not usually used for a daily driver, as you need to rev it so high to get going. The whole idea, is to give you the ability to hold the brake, and launch at a much higher RPM than stock...mainly for racing.

Well im going to follow the instructions that the owner from the shop gave me... ill be installing the the transmission valve body with converter regulator valve, and pressure regulator valve from sonnax... and the transgo shift kit... should i have any other valves installed from sonnax?? also ill be tunning my car again in a month, and ill have them raise the oil pressure and if possible work on the torque converter settings.... hope this would make it better.... ill let you guys know how it turns out...

this may be a long shot, but, take your TC out, hold it in your hands then shake it side to side. if it sounds like a bag of marbles, then you know where your problem lies....you need a new TC

your list of symptoms sound eerily similar to what bobkabob went through. i bought his car and planned on using his TC in my cougar, but when we went to install it we noticed that it was making noise. so i called up levelten and they said its not supposed to make that noise and that it in fact was destroyed. i subsequently ordered a new one. after everything is done we are gonna dissect it and see what went wrong.

IIRC to test the stall of a torque converter, you simple step on the gas, and see at what RPM the car takes off. So if you have a 3000rpm stall, it should hit around 3000 give or take 100 or so when you hit the gas at wide open throttle, assuming you don't break the tires lose to much.

I was told the brake test was not accurate...

soo what symptoms did he get??? i mean it does move just takes a little longer to lock up... did his torque converter slip once the car was in motion?? let me know...roger
