Some friends and I decide to go for a little midnight cruise. Me and a few friends in my Speed 6, and a couple other friends in an 06 Charger.

We go for our cruise and everything is pretty uneventful until we're on the way back into town. The Charger goes for a little sprint, so I decide to return the favour and do the old blow-off valve in the face fly-by trick.

I drop it to 5th and take off after the Charger, fly by, shift to 6th and for some reason, just decided to keep going. Empty stretch of highway that I know pretty well.

We see a single car coming in the other direction and one of my rear passengers says "I don't think your radar detector is on". Right as I look up to check it lights up like a christmas tree and starts wailing about Ka band.

I look down at the speedo as I hit the brakes, 170+ km/h in an 80 zone, not good.

I manage to get her down to around 85 just as the cop car goes by. I've already resigned to my fate and start looking for a place to pull over. I watch the rearview mirror and wait for the lights to come on......waiting.....waiting. Nothing.

As soon as there is a bend between us i drop it to 4th and take off again, just in case he changes his mind.

Maybe he had something more important to get to, maybe he wasn't paying attention, I don't know. But whatever it was, I'm grateful!

wow yeah definatly luckey there, got to love it when that happens tho. Or when they come from behind you lights flashing when you are speeding, and as you pull over blow past you..

But that definatly would have freaked me out too, nice to hear you didn't get dinged!

Slamming on the brakes was probably the WORST thing you could do! If I'm driving along, not really paying any attention to the dude on the other lane, and I see his headlights dive to the ground, I'm gonna KNOW that he's speeding! Whereas if you simply squeeze out of the throttle and slowly reduce your speed, I won't see anything sudden and I probably won't give you a second glance. Not to mention, by you hitting the brakes, I see the reflection of your brake lights off whatever is behind you (trees, etc). If you don't hit the brakes, I won't see the brake lights go off, and again, you won't attract as much attention to yourself.

Normally I agree with what you're saying here. But he full on got me with radar, my best bet was to get my speed as low as i could.

Going in the opposite direction the cop cars radar will tell him a speed of 250mph he would most likly see it as a faulty detector and continue on his way. even if he decide to turn around the idea that he might be able to find you is enough to keep most cops away. Cops report that they are chasing you and if you get away they need to do alot of paper work. They prob saw your car and thought of the paper work.

That would be 250 KM/h. And i'm pretty sure the radar detectors are connected to the speedo of the police car to calculate just the speed of the other car, otherwise they would be useless.

You may be right in that he thought by the time he turned around, I would be gone and it wasn't worth the trouble.

Whatever it was:

I miss this forum. I posted this story on a few others and just get yelled at.

What kind of radar detector?

What kind of radar detector?

http://www.myradardetector.com/pni_silver_bullet.htm

EDIT: I DON'T recommend it. It doesn't detect as well as my old one and batteries last between 10 days and 10 minutes.

This incident (and thread) make me want to shop around for a new one.

yeah I need to get some type of radar detector. I've also been pulled over once passing a cop like that and he was bang on my speed (80 in a 50km/h).

Does anybody use their e-brake anymore? I always used it when slowing down to avoid giving the authorities a light show.

Ouch. Cordless radar detectors are horrible. They go in and out of a "sleep cycle." During this sleep cycle, radar detection is worthless.

Check out RadarDetector.net (http://www.radardetector.net) you'll find loads of info on what would be the best radar detector for you.

Yes, I pull my e-brake while doing 100mph all the time to avoid attracting the attention of the police.

I think continuing at speeds that are worthy of jailtime are probably worse than slowing down quickly. Cops always tag you at least twice, up here anyway. I think it would be better to have one high speed and one low speed, vs. two way above the limit.

I agree when speeding around twenty to thirty over though, get off the throttle and look respectable

not pull numb nuts... apply... ive used the ebrake before as well... you just have to know how to properly use it... just yanking on it will definitely hurt you more than help you

just remember cop cars have detectors for radar detectors, i had a fairly new radar detector and was pulled over specifically for it even though it was spec-1 and (i cant remember the name of the other) immune, i even asked the cop how he got me and he named the new one that was in his car.
170$ ticket and im fighting it so my insurance doesn't annaly rape me.
also remember ur going 170+ the cop has to slow down turn around and get up to 200+ just for the slightest chance of catching up to u. now i know cop cars are fast but cops aren't stupid and realize how long that would take.

The new radar detector detector that they have is called the Spectre-2.

Radar detectors are legal where I live so I don't have to worry about that. Plus a lot of new radar detectors have anti-radar detector detector (say that 3 times fast)

I went out and bought a Beltronics 955 yesterday and hardwired it in. No more annoying batteries for that stupid cordless one.

wanderingmind, you seem to know quite a bit about radar stuff, what do you think of this unit? I did some reading and it seems to be one of the better ones without getting into the really expensive ones like the Passport X50 or a V1.

The 955 held its own in the latest GOL radar detector test. It was declared the best radar detector under $200. So, great buy man! Welcome to the underground world of countermeasures

The only "bad" things about the 955 are:
Filtering - it won't be as quiet as the X50, RX-65 or STi, but it will be much quieter than the V1.
Features- not as many bells and whistles as the other top detectors.

Here's the latest GOL test. (http://www.guysoflidar.com/march-2007/radar-detector-test.html)
