View Full Version : Tuning for European gas...
As some of you know, my car will be here soon from the States... (yeah!)
I have talked to several owners of U.S cars here and they all said that after a few month of using high octane gas (95 is normal, you can get 98), their CEL came on.
Since our cougar is tuned for 87 gas, is there anyway a tuning shop can retune my car to take 95 gas?
thanks for the help.

well if you are going to have the car tuned don't most tuners bump the fuel curves and timing so you have to run premuim anyway? I know of one SVT owner that is over in germany and I don't recal him ever mentioning anything about having a cel because of high octane gas, i would think that the pcm could adjust to a point anyway

To answer you question yes you could bring it to a dyno and have them tune it for higher octane. You should be able to run a bit more timing to gain a little bit of hp. Call some dyno shops up and see what they can do for you. Look for a SCT tuner if possible.

In most countries (including all of Europe and Australia) the "headline" octane that would be shown on the pump is the RON, but in the United States and some other countries the headline number is the average of the RON and the MON, sometimes called the Anti-Knock Index (AKI), Road Octane Number (RdON), Pump Octane Number (PON), or (R+M)/2. Because of the 8 to 10 point difference noted above, this means that the octane in the United States will be about 4 to 5 points lower than the same fuel elsewhere: 87 octane fuel, the "regular" gasoline in the US and Canada, would be 91-92 in Europe. However most European pumps deliver 95 (RON) as "regular", equivalent to 90-91 US (R+M)/2.
That was taken from wikipedia. (I know that they are not the most reliable, but yeah) Hopefully that helps you out Rich.

yeah, but you are paying 6 to 7 U.S dollars per gallon for that gas, where as in America, price of gas is around 2 dollars per gallon.
Thanks Jman. That really helps... but i will find a good tuning shop and do what Blackcoog suggested.
Thanks Blackcoog and Jman!

In England i am paying around 96.9p/Litre for 99 octane. That works out at about 96.6p/0.26 gallons:eek: which is around $2 for 0.26 gallons which is $8/gallon..... whoah!!!:banghead:

There are no SCT dealers in europe. They do have Dreamscience over there for european spec cars. Different pcms. They are not compatible but SCT is partnered with dreamscience to get it done.

So the right hand drive cougars in Australia, which I am told are from europe would need to get their pcm's modified via the dreamscience product? is that correct.
Edit: Just read on their site and it seems they are already in partnership with CAPA in Australia, so that would tend to mean that CAPA australia would be able to provide the tune for the cougars downunder.
Somebody correct me if I am wrong

Same thing here in The Netherlands, octane 95 would be 7USD a gallon, but its better to use octane 98, or Shell V-Power(octane 100) V-Power costs around 9 USDollars a gallon, and that's in the city, long the highway its even more. And still rising... It would almost take the fun of driving a car... almost :)
