Alright here is the info, I leave work to drive home. Shifts into first fine, push in the clutch and am putting my hand on the shifter when it pops really hard out of first. Kinda odd so I pull it into second per normal and nadda damn thing happens. Try other gears same ****. Coast into the parking lot and shift it around and such the thing won't move. What the **** did I break this time? I am seriously about to push this thing into a ditch and hope it blows up at the bottom of the ditch so I can collect some Ins. Money.

You may have popped the shift linkage off either at the shifter itself or the tower- Worst case, the linkage itself has broken inside the trans.

Visually inspect the linkage (visible at the rear of the trans below the master cylinder, or just underneath the gear shifter) to see if it's popped off. If so, put them back on and check for wear in the linkage grommets, replace as necessary.

If the linkage is in tact, but the shifter just moves in a circle like there's nothing there, you've broken the linkage in the trans and it has to come out (tower at least, trans at worst).

Interior linkage is intact I will probably run over to teh car in a few and atleast tow it to my office lot and try and check the linkage on the back side of the trans. Which might make sense so we'll see. Also the shifter doesn't move around in cirlces or similiar at all it moves into the standard "gated" locations that it would normally be able to move into when shifting into gear.

thanx for the idea on that linkage on the back of the trans I didn't look at it too closely as there is about a foot of snow in the lot i rolled into.

Sounds like the shift tower bolt has gotten sheared off. I could move it forward and backward and side to side as normal, when mine happened, but it would not engage in gear. Check the linkage first, but if not you have a days task ahead of you, and pray the shift forks are indexed in neutral.

Fo sho, I'm going to help you. We'll do it right on your car and buy the right fricking bolt. They have them at the auto parts store I come to find out, I drilled and tapped a defferent thread in mine and it was a PITA. Not really an all day task, a half case should be enough.

were you able to do her without pulling the trans and by just pulling the tower?

Well I went and moved the car to my fiances parents house. it isn't a connector at all. If I move the block on the trans that the cables connect to it does dick ****. So am I pretty much able to assume this is a popped bolt head?

Sheared bolt head. Best case scenario, you can fish the bolthead out of the tranny and all you need to do it replace the bolt. If you don't get it out and try to drive the car, you'll do just like I did...

Yes it can be done without pulling the trans, I was able to fish out the bolt with a magnet. Actually I needed to get it out to find out how large the bolt head could be to replace it with. How does Friday sound?

In reality its a very inexpensive, but time consuming job. The left motor mount needs to be removed to access the last 2 or 3 shift tower hold-down bolts. That is really the only ***** about the whole job.

oh so it is the upper mount that everyone is saying has to be removed. Mine shouldn't me too hard to remove that as this engine has only bee in for about 3 months. and that mount was completely out before that. I have to see about how I am going to get this sucker home. If I don't figure somethign out I am ging to eb doing it in my fainces parents garage this week sometime.

Well then it should only be like an hour job tops, provided we can fish out the old bolt easily.

hmm well heres for hoping that it is that and not the diff somehow.

Do you know if the car is going into gear?? When you move the shifter into gear, and let out the clutch, does the speedometer still move?? If so, bet on it being something in the trans, not the linkage

Jorgen

I didn't notice the speedo moving at all. I am actually going to be checking that out as well as a few other things in about 2 hours here after I leave work. But if Iam remembering correctly the speedo doesn't move (which is good as if it did that would be a bad sign for the diff).

Yeah...that is what lead me to the diff in mine. Trans went into every gear, and the speedo would move.

Jorgen

I sure hope it doesn't move when I get over there in a few. I don't think it was moving when I was in it last night.

The shift tower is indexed before the spot where the sheared bolt is so it will move like the trans is going in gear, it just wont click and feel like its in gear. I broke mine in the middle of an intersection and was stranded there waiting for a hook for a while, your lucky yours popped and were able to coast.

Well wasn't the bolt, it is my diff is dead. ****

Ya you aren't kiddin' with just getting my new engine in about 3k ago now this pops I am fuming. I guess I am going to have to buy a second car so that this one can sit and be repaired.

The way I know its the Diff is I went to my fiances parents after work to check things out and when I started it and put it into 5th the speedo shot through the roof and the car didn't move and inch.

No, I plan on doing it myself (maybe jasons help since he has done a dif before) and putting a LSD into it.

Well ladies, long story short I am having a great day since about 3:00 on. I came up with a last ditch idea (from CEG) of what my problem was to save myself from buying a Focus today and it was right. Turns out after I pulled my drivers side Half shaft to replace a punchtured CV boot the shaft just keeps sliding out of the trans now so I have to get a retaining spring clip to hold that into the trans like it had stock but the Manuel says not to re install. After taht should be all fixed up. Ordered up some fresh trans fluid from Napa at the end of the street and they shoudl have that in the morning so I will be going to the fiances parents house to do the work after work tomorrow and then the car should be good to go. Atleast now I can put off buying a daily driver for a few more weeks or a month till i figure out where I am going with a new job.

I had that happen on my 86 Accord a few years back, good to hear it wasn't the diff!

Jorgen

Ya, now I am just waiting on napa to get my freakin fluid in. Was supposed to be in Thursday bu the bastards sent them the wrong stuff so now it is monday it should be in. Don't want to drive her with the little shavings from the end of the splines in the trans.
