Hey everyone. I just jumped over from j-body.org because I'm thinking very seriously about trading in my old sunbird for a 99 Cougar I looked at today. The guys & gals over there thought you might be willing to give some advise. I've been in a GM j-body for almost 9 years, so I'm not really up to date on Ford/Mercury.
What, if any, common problems do these cars have that I should look out for? The one I looked at was a 2.5L V6 automatic with about 64,000 on the clock. Body is immaculate. The dealership was asking for $7000. I really like this car...just don't want to get hosed. Any advise or comments would be welcome and appreciated. Thanks!

Hey Spider, I recently purchased 99 ATX V6 love the car. I have heard that the altenater can be troublesome. I'm a big FBody fan but the Coug has great daily driver atributes and great lines with decent performance. I say you go for it!

BEFORE YOU BUY...check the for sale thread in this forum. You might be able to get a better deal from one of the members here(unless you're financing). If you're looking for a daily driver...this is it. If you're lookin to mod...this is definately it. Other problems you may have is the fuel pump. But there is a recall and ford will pay for the change,( some years only) and the other problem is with the sunroof tracks (there is some sunroofs where the tracks are plastic and break). I haven't had Any problems with mine!!!!!

Well, I had a 03 cavi. L61. 5-speed. With intake, exhaust, pulleys, a\c delete, and 16-8.5 TSW rims. I ran a 14.3 1/4 mile with a few other things(bushings, mounts, etc). The only way you are going to get that is with the 2.5l V6 is with alot of upgrades. Or the 3L swap. I know you guys on that site with the SOHC like to do the swap to the ECOTEC swap or the seceret cam. You have to know our cars weight in at around 2900-3200 lbs. Your car around 2650 lbs. That is if you are looking for performance in the 1/4 mile. If you are looking for autocross. We will be more of a contender to the stock class. Due to our standard rear disk brakes, rear suspension, etc.(you will find more if you search). Not the whole twist beam set-up. (look it up in the search forum). Plus our stock tire can go up to 17" not the 16" for you guys. If you are looking for interior, we got you beat by a land slide. The cougar interior is far more better. Exterior the same. For tuning look into the Xcal. for programming. Also I must let you know you can't just throw on a super or turbo without a-lot of planning. Our internal aren't as good as the ecotec. But out compression ration isn't 10.1 either. Low boost is cool, but anything over 6 psi. is in the danger zone. If you have anymore questions p.m. me
Hope this helps.

My sister has a 97 Cavalier. It's like a toy compared to my Cougar. No comparison whatsoever. From the interior quality to the suspension to the performance.

I passed on the one I was looking at because I found water on the inside of the oil cap, but found another one even better shape and the same price and bought it Friday night. Haven't got to drive it a lot because I've been at work all weekend, but so far I love it.
