So my 1999 Cougar finally ate it's first Alternator (just shy of 89000), and a battery charge with it (the Battery was replaced last year). I'm off to do the Accessory Belt & Alternator replacement this weekend (thank god for three day weekends!) but have three choices on recharging my battery - 2A, 8A, 12A, not to mention Regular / Deep Cycle or Agm. Gel Cell battery type choices (spot the noob?). It's a Ford Red Top... Can someone clue me in?

...and given the number of hits for 'Alternator Replacement' on this board, can anyone point me at the defacto alternator replacement method?

Thanks,

Chris

Perhaps this would have raised more interest (or boredom) had I put Alternator in the title?

ChrisHi Chris; usually it is better to charge your battery slowly. A trickle charge allows all cells to charge fully and evenly. Since your going to be cussing under the car at the alternator for a while..trickle charge it (2A). As for the alternator..not sure if installation made it to the 'how to' section...but you should find several accounts in an 'alternator' search...good luck ...G.

Disconnect it and charge it on low, and make sure its FULLY charged before reinstalling it. If not the alternator may full field itself and burn out immediatley. You should get a voltage reading of 12.4-12.6v on a fully charged battery with it in the car and nothing running.
