View Full Version : not wanting to start... fuel pump problem?

so I went to start my car this afternoon, and it started a little rough then died before I put it in gear. Turned it again and could not get it to start - acting like it's getting no fuel. currently have 3/4 tank of gas. Checked the fuses and relays for the fuel pump and all were good.
At the time, I was parked in a driveway that's pretty steep, so thinking back to the pre-fuel pump recall from a couple years ago, remembered that was one of the things that made a bad pump act up... so rolled out into the street, and tried again. Pretty much did the same thing again. acted like it was on the verge of starting, but not getting enough (if any) fuel. did this for about 30 minutes or so. (LOVE my optima battery by the way ) for lack of any other ideas at the time, my brother-in-law decided to try some old GMC fuel pump fix  pounded on the fuel tank in the general area of the pump. After that it acted like it was closer to starting, but still no. So we decide to push it back into the drive way (backed in).
Figured I'd try it one more time after it was back in the drive way and it finally did start. drove home the 30 miles or so, and it ran perfectly.

any ideas?

oh - and I did have the recall done, but since it was having fuel pump issues, it was changed out right when the notice came out, with the same as the original, instead of waiting for the redesigned pump to come out a couple months later. so... believe if it is the pump, it would still fall under that recall. (?) is Fett ever still around?

edit: also, have not had any other signs of anything wrong lately, and once it did start, there was no CEL (dont know if it'd pick up on a bad fuel pump or other fuel system issue).

when my original one went bad - it was the same left turn thing - but only with less than 1/4 tank.

yep. that was the thing for mine... cept it was at 1/2 tank gas... at 1/4 tank my car acted like it didnt have any gas at all.

but that was three years ago... haven't had those types of problems at all before the issues this afternoon.

well you said it didnt seem like the engine wast getting enough gas correct...

and its the fuel pumps job to pump the gas into the engine.
to me, i think that sounds liek a bad fuel pump.

experiment: put your key in and click it over (dont start it, just t hwere electricity comes on)
listen, you can hear your fuel pump pumping, kind of a *bvvvvvvvvtttt* can you?

well, NOW it starts like nothing was ever wrong... but would like to know what the deal is so I dont get stranded somewhere when it decides to do it again.

well i heard it over the cell phone... and now that ive had time to think about it im thinking its Fuel pump or Filter... or just a clogged line. If it was PATS it wouldnt even try and turn over i believe. Then again it could be spark too... bad wires or plugs ... but i doubt it ... it didnt seem to be firing on any clyinders.

exactly. since once it finally did start, it ran perfectly, wondered if something in the fuel lines/filter/pump was clogged and cleared itself up (possibly with that GMC fix  - which by the way, I do not condone beating on any part of my car).
not that it should make a difference, but we did change out the rear brakes yesterday morning, so the rear was on jack stands for an hour or two.

edit... and thanks Moraki for letting me interrupt your new years drinking

It would turn over if it were a PATS issue....I mistakenly stuck my F150 key in the Cougar once....it rolled over but wouldn't start.

ok - talked to my Ford service guy Alex, and...

1.) the fuel pump recall is still open for my car (since it was replaced with the orig design pump)
2.) a bad PATS key will cut the fuel, not the starter and could work/not work off and on when they are losing their smarts.

so, thinking my issue the other day was probably the key - but good to know I still have the fuel pump recall to fall back on
