Hey folks, finally managed to get the car to the shop to read the engine codes. Though my wife threw away the sheet of paper that I have the codes on.

I had two codes, one was I belive PO401 which had something to do with EGR pressure valve? Anyone know what work this entails? The secons code I do not remember, maybe PO451, but I know the mechanic told me it was the rear cat had to be replaced. Anyone know the cost to do this? Thanks

Andy

p0401 is a exhaust gas recirculation flow insufficient code.

Wasn't a p0451 if your rear cat has to be replaced. That code is EVAP specific.

If your going as far time and money wise to have that rear manifold replaced, might as well go with some headers with MIL eliminators. Is your ATX or MTX?

EGR Insufficient Flow is usually a sign of a bad DPFE. It's not too bad to replace when the engine is cool.

Thanks, I have a MTX. So what needs to be replaced? I guess I can do the upgrade. Planning on doing the suspension this spring anyway and do a body kit and paint job. Anyone know the instructions are in the Haynes Repair manual? With these two codes, is it still ok for me to drive around?

you can but the car will continue to run like crap. Get a nice set of MSDS headers(come with MIL eliminators gaskets, and hardware), since your an MTX it won't take as long as it would for a ATX.

The first thing I do when I get an O2 code is erase the damn thing. It is likely never to return- I've gotten errant codes that never came back.

If it comes back, and it's consistently a specific code, then it's time to get to work. If you do not want to go with the header route, then replacing of your downstream O2 on the offending bank is a good idea.

If you still get the same code with the new O2, then you're outta luck and the manifold (with its defective catalyst) has to be replaced.

DPFE sensor is a $40 part and can be replaced by a fairly novice individual. It's position under the EGR valve makes it somewhat of a pain to get to, but it's only 2 bolts, a single harness, and 2 hoses that plug into it. Don't get the hoses mixed- It uses the pressure differential between the two to determine EGR flow.

Thanks Dan, I O2 sensors are 4 months old and the engine light was intermittent before the new sensor and even after.

So it looks like I will have to replace the manifold and the DPFE sensor. Are the instructions in the Haynes manual for both?

Andy

DanG

I'd go with headers- I don't think boneyards can sell the manifolds because they contain catalysts- But you may find one that will. Buying new is just painful.

Disconnect the Y-pipe, grab onto the 6 13mm bolts that hold the manifold on, and pull it out. If B1, then you'll also have to disconnect the EGR sample tube. DO NOT pre-soak any of the bolts with penetrant- You want the studs to come out of the heads- Not the nuts off the studs. However, if B1, then soak the EGR sample tube in penetrant.

Hey Dan, I finally got off my ass and changed out the DPFE, now I am getting P1401, DPFE high voltage detected. Did I do something wrong when I installed the new unit?

Codes that were in the engine before were P0420 and P0401.

Don't know if this makes a difference, but my replacement DPFE was the metal one that was exactly like the stock unit and not the plastic one I thought replaced it.

Andy

I don't think so... There's only 2 silicone rubber tubes and a single wiring connector. Sounds like a bad DPFE? Pull battery power (turn the headlights on to make sure all power is drained from the system) for about 10 minutes and see what returns. May just need to "recalibrate" itself.

12three45
07-05-2007, 09:02 PM
Ok, will do, but I erased the code from the PCM. Wouldn't that do the same thing?

Andy

DanG
07-05-2007, 09:15 PM
That would clear the code, but not the adaptive tables in the ECU. With a new sensor, I'm leaning towards recommendinng that you'd want to re-baseline the ECU and the sensors (so the ECU would get a fresh "boot" and get fresh data from all sensors). Easiest way to do that is pull power or disconnect the ECU harness for ~10 minutes.

Ok, I think I might have killed my car. While the batter cable was disconnected, I decided to clean the MAF sensor. The MAF housing didn;t seem to want to come off the intake tubing so I sprayed electrosolve contact cleaner in the intake at the sensors and thought that the cleaner with evaporate and everything inside the intake would be ok. Now my car will not combust. I starts for about 1-2 seconds and shuts off. This stuff is flammablew so it should burn. Did I mess up some other sensors in the intake? I took the filter off fo the night and let it air out. Hopefully everything works tomorrow, crossing fingers.

EDIT: I found out that my MAF sensor is screwed. I disconnected the MAF and the car started. Do you think this is a hardbreak and i have to replace or I can do something to fix it? How do I replace it? The sensor and the housing or just the sensor? I just cleaned the MAF from the Lexus this weekend and everything was fine. The onlything was the sensor came out of the housing for me to clean. The cougar did not.

Andy

DanG
07-06-2007, 01:46 PM
Eek. You may have schmoked the sensor. You can get one out of any boneyard (one from any Contour/Cougar that matches your fuel system type). Of course, there's always Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market (http://www.car-part.com) ...

on a sidenote - there are no haynes/chilton manuals for the cougar...

and i've never seen a metal replacement dpfe sensor - sure you didn't get someone's repacked oe sensor? - but hey as long as it's working :)

I have a Haynes manual, but it is still confusing most of the time.

Well I didn't think they made them anymore either. Don't know if it is working either since I have not run it after ECU reset. Another coug owner is selling his stock MAF so will have to wait a few days.

When I kept getting DTC codes after the install and before the ECU reset, I really thought someone returned their old unit to autozone. We'll see.

07-08-2007, 07:22 PM
Actually there is a Chiltons for the '99 Cougars and '95-'99 Contours. I have one.

The Ford service CD is good, too - too tired to find the link right now but it's around on the internet somewhere.

DanG
07-09-2007, 09:44 AM
Just replace the whole unit- That's how you'll get it out of a boneyard, and it prevents you from having to switch out the electronics, which can damage the fragile heating element in the MAF.

12three45
07-14-2007, 09:01 AM
Well I installed the new MAF and the car starts, but still getting the P1401 DTC. i guess I will get another DPFE and see if the one I got was bad. though i seem to have misplaced my receipt so I might have to eat the extra cost.

Can't advise on the DPFE, but regarding the manifolds:

Ignore the P0420 for now. It usually disappears after you fix the problem causing related codes.

Also, when my pre-cats went bad, I simply got a pair of CEL (a.k.a. MIL) eliminators for $20. The pre-cats aren't really necessary if your main cat is good.

Hey, I thought the metal DPFE were not made anymore? I stopped by Pepboys and they had the same part.

12three45
12-27-2007, 05:56 PM
Hey folks, its been 5 months, but got around to replace the second dpfe. Though I do not get a engine code yet, but in the pending codes, I still get the P0401. If it does show up as an CEL, what else can be the problem? Thanks

Been fixing my car slowly but surely. Replaced my suspension, took me two days. Just got the sunroof to go down after 6 months. One track is still good and it opens and closes, but doubt I will use it anytime soon.

My indiglo guages are dead so have to take it out. Then replace my antenna assemble since it broke. Finally I think is the hydraulics for the trunk door needs to be replaced.

I need to replace mine, too - my hatch clocked me on the head the other night!

Tigg
12-27-2007, 08:47 PM
Mine did that too, and with that razzi spoiler it's even worse. :(
I got new truck struts for Christmas though, now it flies open. It's about a 5 minute job, but you need a helper to hold the trunk open while you replace the parts.

skater

... but you need a helper to hold the trunk open while you replace the parts.

That sounds like a challenge to me!

Hey, if I can rehang an RV awning alone, replacing hatch struts shouldn't be a problem at all! :)

DanG
12-27-2007, 10:46 PM
Does that awning hang at least? Maybe you told us already, but after that gawdawful welding job I did on it... I should try again- Now I have my MIG welder that can do aluminum... MUCH easier than TIG, but not nearly as precise as TIG can be...

I had to replace my hatch struts after 5 years... I think they were about dead again, Kevin? Razzi wing doesn't help, as Nicky pointed out...

Tigg
12-27-2007, 11:12 PM
Yeah, mine would hit me in the head constantly. :( They were original though, so 8 years...
RJ, you could do it alone, but I promise it's much easier with someone to hold it open. They pop on and off better when the hatch is open completely.

12-28-2007, 12:53 AM
they are only bad in really cold weather. Otherwise they have been working well.

Yep, the awning is working fine, not that I've had much chance to use it. :(

Well my CEL came on again after a day of driving. Anyone have an idea what else besides the DPFE will cause the P0401? Last ditch will take it to the dealer. Have to get an emissions test in a couple months for the car registration.

Well actually I am dealing with the same problem. And so far I got it to go away for a little while by changing out the DPFE, then it came back and someone mentioned on here that I should go and clean out my throttle body.. sure enough the thing was clogged up like a Mother F#*^$ lol.. I have pics I will post. But yea that kept the code away for a good two months, but just recently It started to come back. So I think all the gunk got further down into my UIM or possibly down to the LIM >?
But anyways once I get that cleaned out somehow, I am hoping my new PCV oil catch system will keep this problem at bay for good :P

the TB before and after.. just shows how much crud actually makes it threw the PCV line..

Thanks, I just might have to take the UIM off and clean the thing. I hear that it is not that hard to do. Do you need torque wrench to tighten the UIM bolts back on?

Any suggestions on cleaning the UIM? Or just clean the throttle body? Did you just turn the car on and used some kind of cleaner and sprayed it in?

Andy

12three45
02-03-2008, 07:44 AM
Well, my EGR ports in the UIM was just as clogged up. Can't believe it could get that bad. Were you able to fix your engine code with the new PVC setup? I guess I need to start changing my PVC out every year just in case.

I'll do sea foam with my next oil change to hopefully force the rest of the gunk out.

So far so good, no engine light. Now just have to drive 100 miles so I can get my emissions test and get my registration renewed.

I have a p0125 a p1000 and a 1602???
are these serious enough to see a mechanic? or will it work itself out?
I have plenty of coolant...

also what might all of this mean?

DanG
03-19-2008, 11:45 PM
Cougar 101 (http://www.newcougar.org/forums/welcome/4193-cougar-101-a.html).

The 0125 means you have a defective ECT sensor or your thermostat has gone bad (i.e. always open, engine never heats up).

The 1602 I actually had to Google:

Ford OBDII Powertrain Diagnostic Trouble Codes P1500-P1699 (http://www.aa1car.com/trouble-codes/ford_codes_p1500-p1699.htm)

P1602 Immobilizer/ECM comms error

Never seen that one. Clear it, see if it comes back... If so, may have bad ECU/immobilizer, or the RFID chip in your keys may be defective or not being read right by the computer.

I assume its okay to drive on... I won't have time to take it to the shop for till saturday

and thank you...

and is there a better thermostat/waterpump than stock...? I've had problems with the cheap plastic

gamiller
03-23-2008, 10:43 PM
thermostat <> water pump.

yes, some people advocate replacing the water pump with one that has a metal impeller; however, your code is not suggesting that the water pump is the problem.

any brand thermostat will do; i'm fairly sure that all are made of metal. feel free to comparison shop... or simply get one from the nearest parts store.

You dudes rock. I have been fighting with the P401 Code for months and could not pass emissions (though the emissions were fine). I found this thread and checked the throttle body passages like 'thelaststand1984' suggested and eureka that thing was clogged up big time. I cleaned it with a small screwdriver, a piece of 'weed whacker' cord (for the passage to the EGR, and lots of cleaner. I put it back together, started it up and got three more codes: lean bank 1, lean bank 2, and insufficient catalyst flow and i about had kittens :banghead: until it occured to me that it was probably from the all throttle body cleaner I used:facepalm:. I cleared the codes, passed emissions and I have drove it over 1000 miles with no returning codes, Yeahya.

Hopefully it will stay off, but who cares for another year.

On a side note, it went from 22.2 mpg to 24.1 mpg driving in the burbs as quickly as possible. Not bad returns for a couple hours work on my 2000 Cat w/ 2.5 ATX.

Thanks a million NECO dudes:biggrin:.
