Due all people alt problems, I kinda got tired to copy and paste so here it is for the last time...

TIP: to take the alt off w/o movin' the cv joint, a friend helped me with a very long socket from the driver side (taking out the other weel of course) and with me holding the sockt to the alt's nuts (at the engine's belt side).

So this is what i sugest to all cougs owners:

Do a mod to the alt!...
the stock alt has a 6 doide cell on the rectifier, so replacing it for an 8 diode will send more induction to the stator then the alt will cover all the extra stuff you use, (as me: subs, dvd, fogs, ac, etc). but if you replace this you have to replace the stator too... this mod WON'T damage any electrical stuff, I've been driving my ride more than a year w/o any alt issue and i use all electrical things together (above mentioned) very often. You can also prevent any bearing issue by replacing both (rotor and pulley's) for a better brand ones (no offense but not taiwan or china's)...

If you guys don't have idea about the things i said just talk about it to your electrical mechanic and he will also sugest this... i'm sure he has to know the howto's...

( I just copied and pasted this info, so if any moderator can explain all this in real english, take some pics of it and post it on a sitcky will be helpful for all...)

So how do we go about obtaining this 8 diode thing and the stator? And where is the rotor and pulley we are suppose to replace?

Where are we to get this 8 diode and stator replacement?

And where is this rotor and pulley we should replace also?

rotor: inside the alt. pulley:... alt's pulley but I was talking about both's bearings... these 2 parts need bearings to spin.

damn, somebody translate the post to real english.

If you guys never opened an alt before or don't have idea 'bout the alt function and parts, then keep spending your bucks replacing and frying your brand new alts. I just saved some pesos with this more than a year ago...

From what I can find the rotor and the diodes are internal parts of the Alt. You can look here they are mentioned http://www.bcae1.com/charging.htm, also the pulley is on the out side ( you know the belt wraps around it).

The main problem people are having with the alternator is the location, not over drawing power from it. There are plenty of people here with the equivalent of a Pink Floyd concert in their car still drawing off the factory alt with no problems.

The issue lies in that the alt is positioned right at the bottom of the engine, almost above the half shaft and unprotected. So it's getting slung with water, grime & salt and wearing down & corroding parts. I've been through 3 alts and each time they come out they are caked with grime.

This can almost be solved by bending a piece of aluminum or plastic to try and deflect anything coming up at it. But with the belt and lack of room to play with it's almost impossible.

Good point - never thought about that.

Could we not put a splash sheild in there somewhere to stop dirt and grime from getting into the alts?

Edit: Didn't notice you mentioned that...

Well... about the removal/install we all know for most ppl is a pita, a splash shield will be wonderful, but there isn't space enough to install one cuz I'm pretty sure will overheat the alt. the only thing I sugest is to attach extra plastic on the fender cover so it can be lower and avoid most splashes.

but flooding will still an issue. here in town we suffered huge floodings last year so thinking to buy that amphibious cougar that someone posted time ago will surely solve this problem

Tads 8th cougar... a very very early model ... had a splash shield on it... never seen it on another.

And Scullin is right... but he forgot to add to the list being next to the headers... getting nice and hot every time.

im sure you are right about the diode and the stator...
however, lot of us has a lifetime replacement warrantied alt so if one goes bad, we will just get another.

Yeah, I usually buy your american lifetime warranties but in this issue surely will took me an entire day to take the alt off, jump up the bridge, get a new one and put it back on...

about the mod i mentioned, more diodes means better impedance regulation (less negative impedance) so the stator allows the alt to make only positive power cycles, and it also reduces converting time from AC to DC, all this electricity basics as u can read anywhere...

But i'm just worried about rain flood... :banghead: maybe i'll change my cat for a pony, mustangs rulz about flooding...

just thought I would chime in and say that I have 110,000kms or something on my 99 cougar, and as of the summer of 2006, I had 4 12" subs, 3 amps, headunit, PS2 and a 7" lcd screen... original alt. (only has been winter driven for the first 2 years though)

IIRC my coug also has a spash gaurd around the alt from the factory as well.

Well I did have one issue in these 3 yrs with my cat, but i made this mod and never had to worry again, i also have almost all stuff u hooked on except 3 amps (cuz i have only 2) and 4 subs (i have 2), a dvd and 3 7" lcd's.

Anyways, I kinda got tired dealing with small engines so I'll sell this cat and get an '04 gt turbocharged pony conv by next week...

but i mean have fun with your 04 mustang...
