View Full Version : I Have A ? About The Cougar
SO i just heard about this thing that cars have installed on them
its called "event data recorder"
this thing records what happens a few seconds befor you have a accident and after so it can tell how fast, were the steering wheel facing and how hard either the brake or gass pedle is been deprest
not to mention that this can be used against you in a court of law
and also this thing can malfunction and no one will now cause it dose not need to be maintained

It was "randomly" installed on many cars including ours. Not all cougars have them... but some do. They were supposed to help them understand how and why some crashes are fatal. I was told they are not to be used in court... but im not sure about that in every state.

I heard about this at work last night someone was talking about a blackbox in cars. I thought it was something in newer models.
lol i was so into telling what it was that i forgot to ask if the cougar came with it lol
and yeah its on the newer models too but you can look in your owners manual and see if it has it or not ! so from what i heard it has been used in court a few times , the one i heard was about a guy that was going down a downtown street and he hit two girls that were backing out of a driveway, he and the police ofemeser that was on the sceen said that he was going about 55 to 60 mph and when they checked the box it said that he was doing a totall of 114 mph!! he was convicted for murder and got a life sentence for it.

the "black boxes" are basically there to record the 5 seconds before and after the deployment of the srs airbag system but not always, once the bags are deployed the data is stored to the computer and can be used in court but rarely is. the data can get corrupted for many reasons mostly if the vehicle gets submerged or due to massive electrical failure like the battery getting smashed. the recorder takes data from wheel speed and engine rpm, as well as what gear it was in before the initial impact, as well as if you were wearing your seatbelt, what diagnostic lights were on...so on and so forth. Our vehicle were never equipped with this "black box." here's more info black box (http://www.harristechnical.com/cdr.htm)

So these black boxes can predict the future? How is it going to start recording 5 seconds before an accident?

"When a traffic crash reconstructionist wanted to know the speed of a car in the seconds before it crashed into the side of a school bus, he found that information, and more, in the car's Event Data Recorder (EDR), a feature quickly becoming standard on all cars. The recorder, a four-inch square metal box, is currently installed in most recent GM vehicles and select 2000 and later Ford vehicles."
read it does your mouth good!:disgust:
No where in that quote does it say how it knows when someone is going to crash. All it says was he found the information. So once again I'll ask, how can it predict an accident?
Why don't you read before you post something totally irrelevant to my question....ass.

it records constantly and dumps the information at a predetermined rate, when an accident occurs the information saved prior to the accident allows the technician to see what the vehicles speed, rpm's and so forth were before the accident happened....READ THE ARTICLE:banghead:

upon further reading i realized that you completely missed the point of the EDR, it records the events that took place before the accident so technicians can see what the vehicle was doing (i.e. speed, seatbelts, ect.). It does not predict the future it tells the story of what happened before airbag deployment...ass.
YAY i started some drama lol

I was going by what was said in the first post. "It records seconds before the accident." No where did it say in that first post that it actually records everything all the time. The article was too long to hold my interest, which is why I didn't read it. You act like a smartass, you're going to get smart ass remarks so deal with it or :gtfo:. kthxbye.
