there arent really restrictions, just restrictions for different classes. the greatest thing that will help you is time behind the wheel at events. even an evolution driving school, or some other performance driving school. it made the biggest difference for me.

This (http://www.scca.com/Inside/Index.asp?Reference=nediv) will help you find your closest local region and links to their websites with more info.

If you post what mods you have done we can tell you what class youre in. If your serious about competing you need to limit your mods b/c some classes are a lot more competitive than others

As for what it is, basically it is a tight road course that is marked by cones, usually in a parking lot or abandoned airport. Cars run one at a time against the clock and course usually have a decent amount of runoff room in case you lose control, so it is a relatively safe environment to push your car.

Some good info for autocross newbies:
Novice Handbook (http://www.tirerack.com/features/solo2/handbook.htm)
Good FAQ (http://www.sfrscca.com/solo2/faq/)

Don't be afraid to let people know your new at your first event. People are generally very accomodating to novices and will be willing to help you out. A final bit of advice is to be a bit humble in the beginning. You most likely won't be fast your first time out. I've seen a lot of people come out to their first evet thinking they are hot **** and end up leaving pissed off because they got beaten badly. Treat it as a learning experience and just have fun. That's the whole point anyway.
