View Full Version : Dual exit vs Single exit exhausts- my impressions

Alright, so I just got my dual off today to sell to scrup.. and put on GI8U2's single. Each are trubendz SS magnaflow 2.5" inch.
Sound- SURELY not the same. The dual is louder than the single by quite a bit, its very noticable since I have a completely built 3L with headers, hi flow cat, etc. Single is more quiet. The dual is perfect for modified and stock 2.5s, for sound purposes.
Power- The dual and single are very close, HOWEVER, I must lean towards the dual feeling more powerful.. maybe it was the noise it was making but I feel that the dual was strong up top, where the single might be a little more down low and a little less up top- all things considered (weight and etc) they are close.

Hi StelthyWeasel. This will be a little hard to explain clearly, but you will see no difference in performance with that setup, assuming your single exhaust used the same muffler and diameter pipe as the picture.
What you have in the picture is a "cosmetic" dual exhaust. You have a single exhaust pipe running into two separate pipes, and outlets. Your exhaust 'choke point" would be the catalytic converters and the mufflers/resonators. Anything you do downstream of those is irrelevant (short of sharp bends or decreasing diameter pipes).
You could hang three, four, five or more exhausts at the back of your car off that single pipe, and it would make no performance difference. It is only for looks (and sound).
A true dual exhaust will have a set of headers coming off each bank of the engine. Each header will feed into its own separate exhaust pipe (each pipe with its own catalytic converters, resonators and mufflers). These two pipes will be connected somewhere along the route by an "H" or "X" pipe (for pressure equalization), and will then branch off again as two separate pipes, culminating in two separate rear exhaust outlets. In other words, two pipes from engine to rear end.
When you have a single pipe splitting off to two exhausts at the rear of the car, like your picture, it is strictly for looks and sound.
Still looks nice though, good luck.

Umm I'm sure that he knows all of that already. I'm still curious as to why the single is less noisy though.

First off, you are an idiot. Lets start there. In the post, I clearly stated "single exit vs dual exit" exhausts. I know it is not a "true dual" exhaust w/ a crossover pipe and etc. Second, I have to say you are an idiot again. I just made these changes, and noted the differences accordingly. I build a whole 3L and do an engine swap and I don't know what a dual exhaust is?
more..

Hello again. I was not trying to insult you or anyone else. It is a common misperception of people to confuse a true dual exhaust with a cosmetic dual exhaust, thinking they will get the same benefits from both.
You made the statement about possibly "feeling" a difference in power between a single "outlet" and a dual "outlet". I was only pointing out that there would be no power difference between the two. I have no idea what your knowledge about cars is, and was not insulting you. Don't know why you felt the need to insult me. I even stated it looked good and good luck.

well I did, and theres really no debate in the argument because I drove it, swapped it out, and drove it again. I even speculated that it might have been because of weight and etc. sigh.. :banghead:

Like I said, I was not trying to insult you or anyone else. I do not know what your car knowledge is, and was not "debating" you, was only trying to be informative. If you notice, I was not arguing before, nor am I now. Only trying to smooth out an obvious misunderstanding.:banghead: So good luck with your setup.

OMG, and you STILL don't understand.
THERE IS NO MISUNDERSTANDING.

You're the retard, retard. He meant a misunderstanding in that you thought he was trying to be a smartass and he was just trying to be helpful. God forbid someone do that around here any more.

No, YOU don't understand, I am no longer discussing your exhaust setup. I am discussing the misunderstanding of you thinking I was trying to "INSULT" or "GET" you (your words). I was only trying to be informative, and you misunderstood THAT as an insult. I WAS NOT TRYING TO INSULT YOU. Simple as that.

man what a thread, I know there was a reason somewhere for this, and I just have a question that may seem a bit newb, but would the right angle turn for the dual exit cause any increase in low down torque at all??? Maybe a minute amount of extra backpressure??? until the gases really start to flow and then allowing for quicker flow up high. Like I said might be minute but may even out the torque curve marginally making it feel faster.
You said in your initial post stealthy that there was some difference and even though I know from reading in other posts there is supposedly no difference but surely a change in exhaust flow makes some difference, guess you haven't got a friend with a dyno at all to see if seat of the pants was right.

my experiance is that Single exhaust provides better HP than split rear dual exhaust assuming the same muffler is used.

This is my understanding from reading that anything under 3.0l will go this way GMK, and if your experience has shown this then it would seem a done deal.
But why not put the car on a dyno stealthyweasel and find out for sure for this particular car, especially seeing you felt it was faster. Maybe maximum hp is better but maybe torque is more available??? Would be an interesting test to see.
