View Full Version : Confused about what to do with the Cougar...

With a little more than a week to go before I get married, the decision of what to do with my car has been looming over me for quite some time now. To summarize, I live in a condo downtown and have only one parking spot. Both the wife and I each have a car, but she doesn't know how to drive stick, and is probably not going to learn. I hate her car because its corolla, I don't even want to be seen in it, let alone drive it. Over the months I've solicited opinions from people on what to do, and basically I have three options:
a) Keep the Cougar. The car is paid off and still runs like a champ, so I could just theoretically put fire and theft insurance on it and store it in my parents garage. I doubt the wife will ever let me buy another car with a manual transmission, so it will be nice to have this in my backpocket if I ever feel the urge to drive a car rather than having a car drive me ;) Of course maintaining it might be a pain in the butt, and I could just end up keeping it around for sentimental reasons.
b) Sell both cars, and buy something new (or slighly used). I like the thought of ditching both and getting something different, but really there is no need to do this as both cars are in good working order.
c) Sell the cougar. Put up with the toyota crapolla for a while and use the money to pay off some debts from the wedding, not to mention save on insurance and maintenance costs of another vehicle which will almost never be used. Even though I've thought of selling the car in the past, I never had the heart to do it, and still not sure if I do (although I have to admit, if I got a good offer for it, that would make the decision a bit easier).
If you guys were in my place, what would you do (i want unbiased opinions, not those of used parts vultures ;) )

I think the golden rule of Multiple Choice applies here.
When in doubt...pick 'C'.
Responsibly speaking though...C is your best choice. Your getting married, have debts, have only one parking spot, and the Carolla is paid for...As much as I agree that its an embarrassment, its a solid car for reliability, and long life...As much as I enjoy the Coug (other then typical Ford engineering at times) I know that its not something I will be banking on lasting for years and years, and will be preparing to move on before it starts costing me. Keeping the Coug is a nice idea, but how practical will it be to store it, then come summer time where are you gonna park it? If at your folks, then you still have to drive to get to it...Kinda a pain in the ar$E. The Coug is a fun fun car man, but if you prepare today...tomorrow will be really fun. Who knows what you might be able to get further down the road, because you got the debts and crap out of the way now, and they aren't costing you then.
Now that I've given very unbiased rationale...What are you willing to part out to me?   Just Kiddin!!!

I say keep it. Sure there are better and faster cars out there, but no other car will make you feel the same.

Why not just get a second Spot???
My buddy lives in a Condo downtown and he has 4 spots for him and his wife. Well one for the wife, 3 for him. I know it's more money, but it's not that much. The convenience is well worth the added cost. There is no way i could live sharing a car with anyone.

Tough choice, I wouldnt recomend getting rid of the cougar but if you have to do it....
I probably wouldnt part with mine and I dont plan on it, as long as it is paid off Im fine devying out a little bit of cash here and there for maintanance. It wont cost as much as a new car.
Any way you can convince her to sell her car or just park it some where else?

find another spot or anotherr place to live. If the cougs paid off no sense in getting rid of it, all its costing you is insurance

All of them have their points I think...
For *C*, it would all depend how much debt... but I like *B* aswell - however only if *A* is not an option ;) heh!

Dude, buying a parking spot costs almost 30 grand in my building (three times what my car is worth!). So either your buddy lives in a really ghetto part of downtown, or makes an assload of money. The other part of the equation that I maybe should have explained is that I don't actually NEED a car. I live within walking distance of my office downtown, and the only time I use my car is on the weekends if I go to visit my family. You can see how this weakens my position when it comes to what car we should own, because she will be the only one using it on a daily basis.

No, he lives in a really nice Condo on the Lakeshore. He owns one spot and pays $50/month to rent each of the other 3 spots. You don't have to buy it, I'm sure you can find someone renting there spot. But like you said, if you don't really need it, sell it to someone who does. *cough* Mike *cough*

Renting another spot is an option, but it will cost about $150 a month, which is a kick in the balls considering I wouldn't be driving it very often. Finding another place to live is not an option right now unfortunately, because I love where I live :) In a couple years, I'm sure we will outgrow the place, and move on to a house though. But is it worth hanging on to the coug for that long? She turns 7 years old in a few days, which is actually about as long as I thought a ford could last

You know its funny, because I know I SHOULD sell it. Its the practical thing to do. But I guess subconciously, I'm turning to you guys to give me reasons or excuses to keep it

I guess I won't say anymore.
Except this...I think all the reasons you've given to get rid of it are bang on.

What Mark said. My aunt lives in a condo downtown, and she rents out her extra space, for $50 / month. I can't imagine why it would cost you so much to rent a space from another condo owner.... I can't recall exactly where her complex is, but, she works at Etrade, and rides her bike from the condo...10 - 15 mins ride.

its supply and demand...in newer condos, they purposely build less spaces than there are units...this drives up the price of owning one, and even renting them can get quite a premium...like i said, $150 a month is not uncommon...

Ajay....I'm kinda in the same boat as you only it's due to my daughter and not a wife....she tells me to keep the car.
If you don't drive it....you don't use it....get a few grand for it and call it a day. Once you get the bills caught up, and the debts paid off, the car will be older and you can buy another one lol....either that, or with the surplus cash lease a new vehicle. In your situation.....don't forget once you are married your insurance drops....so it would be cheaper to insure it and not drive it....HOWEVER....it's VERY CHEAP to drive one vehicle with insurance under her name as the primary....so that will further help you in paying off your debts.
*random comment* did Ajay say when he comes to a meet?*/random comment*
Right now I have 3 cars. 1 summer that the kid does not fit in until she's 20lbs...and the beater....it works for me....then Christine's car.

what about storing it away from the condo? My dad has a huge building for a 'garage' and he rents space to a couple people who dont have space to store a extra car. Maybe you could look into something like that outside of downtown.
And if you are getting rid of it, was it you that has a visteon front? :naughty:
