Hooray for more Ohio jobs lost, and jobs across the nation. Still proud to be an American?

Yes, because it would be much better for Ford to go completely out of business.

Either way, it directly affects Ron and I, seeing as how he works at Ford's head office...

I wouldnt imagine an engineer being affected by this. Mainly the grunts and shop workers are that work in plants.

But good luck, I do certainly hope for the best. My grandma's retirement hasnt been affected which is nice.

Less cars to be made = less engineers needed to design and create them (or atleast chop some and force the rest to work twice as hard)

Still proud to be an American?

I really hope that was a joke... A poor joke, but one none-the-less... FYI, I'll ALWAYS be proud to be an American...

This is what you get when you base an entire states economy on a single segment of the marketplace. **** happens, and the world changes. Ford screwed themselves by not being innovative enough -- and the fact that their union shops demand high wages for under-skilled workers doing menial tasks.

The 10k white collar jobs are from them offering buyouts to their salaried employees, which will determine if they have to lay off workers after that. If they were only to get 5k ppl to take the buyout option, then that'll mean they might need to lay off as many as 2500 people (its a math game, they don't require all 10k ppl to take it).

On a side note, the Jackson, OH Ford plant was not screwed over by Ford, it was screwed over by the UNION. I designed all of the lines and software for that plant, and the union DEMANDED $20 / hr for every station, 99% of which press a single button, or insert a single screw. The owners of the plant said they could not afford it, and the union went on strike. So 3 weeks ago we went in, disassembled the line and systems, and moved them off to Graybill, IN -- which is now live and running, along with many happy workers.

Ron could just take the buyout package and retire early :whoknows:

P.S. great time to be in school :eek2:

Umm.. yeah... I'm definitely on the "affected" list but I feel sorta safe.

As for early retirement, my service time falling into the 0-4 years employed here buys me at BEST a 1-3 month payed voluntary severence, more leaning towards one month so it's not very viable. I just have to cross my fingers and pray!

If I get the boot.... Mexico, here I come ( sorry Maya, but TO is just too darn expensive and I value having more than 1 foot between my house and my neighbors house ).

Word is Ron that those who are leaving already know. So if you haven't heard anything yet, you should be safe.

Sorry John, the "media" word is wrong... internal Ford information from our upper management is that the process hasn't even begun. Has anyone heard of anyone layed off yet??? 10,000 is a lot of people not have have heard of any yet.

Management says that it's a pre-announcement and the real lay-offs will be around February timeframe.

You can come work at Magna, and live in Keswick. Lots of space between your neighbors and not nearly as expensive as Toronto.

Actually my neighbor is an engineer in the automotive field. I wonder if he is affected by these job cuts.

Sorry John, the "media" word is wrong...

Not going by the media man, you forget I just spent 30 hours since Friday with about 100 people from Ford. ;) (Most of them upper management.) They are waiting to finish the buyout process, once that is completed they will know how many, if any they need to lay off. Of course they will have to lay off, since I highly doubt they'll get the number of buyouts they want, but those that are in trouble already know since their management has been notified that their department is under the gun.

You can come work at Magna

Hahahahahaha... I cannot believe you said that. :P Do you know all of the problems that Magna is having right now? Not to mention the place is a nightmare to work at. (Our group is responsible for all of the Magna plants, as well, so we deal direct with them constantly, and get to hear the dirt firsthand.)

It's really amazing what you learn as an outside contractor who deals with all of the automotive suppliers and the primary company both.

I've worked with Magna before... no thank you!

John, what you're saying may be true in the plants, here in the white collar offices, NO ONE KNOWS their future yet and we won't until February. They haven't even officially begun the voluntary offers for us yet. My management 4 levels above me doesn't even know what's in store for us yet.

Well there are a lot of other companies around here in the automotive industry. Or maybe you should start looking at a different industry. The American Auto Industry isn't going to get better anytime soon.

Agreed, my next volutary job move will be AWAY from the auto industry at all costs.

My dad is sweating because he's one of the few white collar workers left. He's 2 years from retiring and is anxious to see what the benefit packages will be. Could hurt him, could bless him.

My brother just left Ford over the summer to work for DTE. (After ford paid over $60,000 for him to get his MBA.) He's kicking his own ass because he could have had the opportunity to take the buyout, and work at DTE.

Your brother probably did the right thing. The media gave people the wrong idea about byouts. You have to have worked at Ford a LONG time to get a good buyout option. For 0 - 4 years of service, you MAY get up to 3 months, at best.

ahhh. My dad's been there for 18 years, so hopefully his turns out well.
