I blew up my 2.5 and now i want to do a 98-99 taurus 3.0l swap. can i put on my lim and uim from my 2.5l? what modifications do i have to do to get it to fit or will it bolt right in? after it is installed, what mods can i get for the car? do i search for 3.0l mods or 2.5l mods, or do they have to be custom made? what performance uim and lim can i get instead of using stock ones? what computer do i use? what harness? JUST HELP!:banghead:

A lot of info available int he stickys but I'll give a summary:

Use a 01+ 3L, buy it complete pay no more then $600 for the engine with nor more then 30K miles

Take the 3L heads off and port match them to match your lower intake manifold, this requires welding and shaping, I can do it for you or others on this site

Replace bearings with better ones both main and rod bearings

Assemble unit and drop in

Use current wireharness and ECM

Flash the ECM with a program to use the larger injectors and displacement

Use all your stock hardware or use SVT UIM and cams if you can find them

Get ready for troubleshooting and prepare to have yoru car down for around 1-3 months

Once it runs there will be some hiccups and you will need a little time and money to diagnose (some are worse then others, depends how good you ar at the install)

Once its settled enjoy the TQ and power :)

I can also build you one ready to drop in with instructions to go over any install differences. PM me if you are interested.

Thanks,
Chris

First things first ... where are you located? MANY of us on the boards have done multiple installs and could help you/do it for you (for money of course).

I have the same problem right now. Yesterday on the way home a piston or rod blew (according to the mechanic) and she started smoking out the exhaust. I pulled over. The engine was really hot. I got the call this morning that I need a new engine. Someone suggested just doing a 3.0 swap...but I wanted to know, how much more money would that be compared to just getting a 2.5. I wanted to get a new one...but do you think that's the best thing to do? Any help would be appreciated!!!

-3L engine: $400. Any more and you're getting ripped off.
-Kinger port-match: $call (dunno what he charges) plus shipping.
-Gaskets/Fluids: $300-$400.
-Labor: $800+, depending on who does it. It's not a trivial swap, and you need someone familiar with the motor or you end up like CougarRacinChic... :(
-Extras: As much as you want- Clutch, aluminum flywheel, SVT cams, P&P as part of the port-matching, etc. You can easily spend $4k to do it right.

However, the grin on your face when you accelerate will be quite priceless.

Wrong!! I spend 800$ for a practically new motor and that was the BEST move I could have made.

$400 on car-part.com. You spent more than you needed for peace of mind of a new motor. That's your decision and your trade-off. Someone on a tight budget can do the motor for $400.

We won't discuss your metal shavings.

That was of my own doing, the integrity of my motor pre-ownership was intact :) and the problem was fixed by me so

On topic however, you make a good point. A 40k-50k runs about 400 dollars locally. Like you said, its about peace of mind. Plus working with this motor doesn't even get my hands oily its so clean.

Its all about taking the time and looking, also driving distance make a difference too. I drove an hour and a half for my 02 Sable block which cost me $400 and had 10K confirmed miles on it. After ripping it down almost to the crank you could tell it had only 10K on it. Just keep looking, you will find deals.

Depends on your area. Mine has been picked clean for some reason ;) so the cheapest within 300mi is $650 + $125 core and it has 60k on it. If you ship you need to add in atleast $150 so to keep it at $400 you need to find a low milaege 3L for $250 which is next to impossible. Most places have $100+ core charges so the price really gets up there then.

I have ALWAYS been able to talk the junk yard down on the phone. It's simple ... stand up straight, take a deep breath and say with authority "Is that the best you can do? I have a tight budget and can swing $600 shipped!" depending on what they say, go from there. If they say no, say "Alright, your loss ... I have 60 more yards to call and 1 and bound to make $600 from me, sorry it won't be you" and then pause a brief second for his/her reply before hanging up ... that last line just might make them reconsider ;)

03' Taurus Block w/8K on it...$320

Anyways, the swap can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. Depends on what all you want to do.

For just the swap, it can be done for around $1000.
For the swap and SVT components (assuming your a cougar) + $300-$600 (varies on where ya get it all)
Headers/y-pipe/exhaust + $600-700
Tuning + $200 - $600 (2 hours dynotuning vs xcal2 and prp)

This isn't even including Trans work, Clutch, Flywheel....

It can get pretty expensive...

Very true, haggling almost always saves you something. I should probably be a little more forceful when shopping.
