It all started with the fuel pump almost immediately after I got the car. That died and I had it replaced. Next was the sunroof getting stuck open. Finally, 2 and a half years after I got the car and 92k miles, the alternator seems to have died today. I have a concern though.... The car was running fine, no problems and then all of a sudden today when I turned it on the battery light was on (1 year old battery) and then the car ended up losing lights, tach, speedo, then died all together after about 2 hours of driving... now my question is recently I had been using one of those Sirius satellite radio receivers through the cigarette plug... would this pull enough current to effectively burn up the alternator, or was the thing just on its way out... I ask because I'd hate to kill a second alternator immediately after the first.

A Sirius tuner? Definitely not - I have a subwoofer and Sirius tuner off my stock alternator with a stock battery.
Your alternator died, you kept driving, and you killed your battery. You may be able to recharge it but it won't have the capacity it did before.

your alt surely got busted...
you american guys all got the same problem cuz it seems your stores sell the same crappy alt.
I did this: our stock alt have 6 diodes arround the copper harness, thats the reason the copper is burning, also making the diodes overheat and get busted too. So I put another 3, with 9 diodes the copper doesn't handle all that electrical current.
I did that a year and a half ago, so now I can use the fog lights, my subs, the dvd and the a/c all at the same time w/o problem...
remember, in all cars the cigarette lighter is one of the most (maybe is the most) power consumer cuz it has very low resistance to voltage on the wire harness...
